Northeast Wrestling “Under the Stars” Live Report
August 2, 2015
Lowell, Mass. (LeLacheur Park)
Report by Mike McMahon (@MikeMcMahonPW), PWTorch contributor

Northeast Wrestling continued its “Wrestling Under the Stars” tour in Lowell, Mass. at LeLacheur Park on Sunday evening. Included on the card were several top-level independent names as well as a three-way dance main event that included three former World Champions in WWE, if you include the WWE version of the ECW Title.

LeLacheur Park is home to the Lowell Spinners, the Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Capacity for the stadium is 4,767, and NEW had an estimated 2,000 in attendance, with most of the infield bowl filled between first and third base and the outfield grandstand left empty. There were also a few hundred seats on the field, around the ring, and a slew of other fans who were standing at the bar-height counters around the top ring of the stadium.

(1) Chaotic Wrestling Hvt. champion Chase Del Monte beat Mike Webb to retain. A very good match to open the show. Del Monte is a local favorite and Webb, who has a striking resemblance to Tyson Kidd both in appearance and style, looked good in defeat. It was still hot at this point, probably 90 degrees, and the ring was baking in the sun all afternoon, so conditions probably weren’t ideal.

(2) The Cam-An Connection (Cam Zagami & Anthony Greene) & Team Friendship (Mark Shurman & Scotty Slade) beat NEW Tag Team champions The Battle Brothers (Anthony Battle & Chris Battle) & Frankie Arion & Jake Manning in an eight-man tag team match. The Cam-An Connection are both in their very early-20s, and both should have bright futures in pro wrestling. Local New England wrestlers have been raving about both, but especially Greene in singles matches has impressed the region’s veterans. The crowd was into this match, especially Manning’s antics as a heel.

(3) “Army of One” Brian Anthony beat Caleb Konley. Anthony made his entrance through the crowd and has the feel of a perfect WWE heel. He’s methodical and didn’t try to get cheered as a heel. You could tell, in flashes, that he has the ability to be very athletic, but he didn’t go there as a heel and it frustrated the fans, who were getting behind Konley as a result.

(4) Mickie James beat Alexxis. The crowd was starting to lose a little steam at this point. Being an open-air ballpark - and the sun was hot today - the sound tended to go straight up, so some of the crowd reaction was hard to judge. Alexxis was effective as a heel, especially establishing herself by arguing and picking on some kids at ringside. Alexxis works other independents in New England as a babyface, but she was effective in establishing that she was the heel here. The crowd popped for Mickie as well, and she received the loudest ovation of the night to this point in the show.

After the match, Mick Foley was introduced for a promo. Foley did his typical shtick, getting in a Lowell reference to the delight of the crowd. The crowd came to their feet for Foley’s introduction, and it was probably the biggest pop of the night.

In the middle of Foley’s promo, Hanson interrupted. That prompted Foley to introduce Samoa Joe.

(5) Samoa Joe beat Hanson via submission. Very good match that, as you would expect, was very physical. Hanson is very athletic for someone his size and showed that off in this match. He missed on a top-rope moonsault near the finish that was one of the most impressive moves of the entire show.

(6) Donovan Dijak beat Travis “Flip” Gordon. This match was supposed to be Dijak against Jimmy Preston, who has become one of the most popular New England talents, but Preston, who tweeted earlier on Sunday he was wrestling on the show, was nowhere to be found. Gordon looked really good in this match drawing the biggest ooh’s and ahh’s with some of his aerial moves.

(7) The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Michael Bennett) beat The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson). This match went the comedy route in the beginning, but it was everything you’d expect from two of the top teams in wrestling. It had some comedic interaction - including the Young Bucks “showing the Red Sox how to hit a home run” before taking turns with mock runs around the bases. Taven appeared to legitimately injure his left leg during the match. In a post-match promo, he talked about how he was waiting for this night for years - Taven grew up just a few miles north of Lowell - and no injury was going to stop him, adding that “even though I think I blew out my hamstring.” Taven limped to the back.

On an aside, there was a kid who was maybe 7-years-old sitting ringside with his family. All night he was chasing down the heels as they left the ring. He actually got some time to shine after the Bucks-Kingdom match. After the Young Bucks mockingly challenged the kid, he charged them before NEW security stopped him as the Bucks cowered back into the locker room. Bennett noticed this and went and picked the kid up, carrying him a bit around the aisle which drew a huge reaction from the crowd, including a change of "Little Kid!"

(8) Rey Mysterio beat Matt Hardy and Alberto El Patron in a three-way dance. Before the bell, El Patron grabbed the mic and asked Hardy if he wanted to team up against Mysterio, “who gets all the cheers.” An entertaining 13-minute main event to close the show, which ended with Hardy and El Patron shaking Mysterio’s hand after he scored the pinfall on Hardy for the win following a double 619.
