EDITORIAL BLOG: Worst WrestleMania build-up in recent memory

PWTorch VIP members have first-look access to all of the Torch VIP blogs in the newly upgraded VIP Forum. Following is a blog from VIP member Truth, whose blogs are published first in the PWTorch VIP Forum. Truth interacts with other VIP members and Torch staff and contributors in the blog comments area.

WWE has a history of booking poorly throughout the year, but with the ability to really put some compelling stories together for WrestleMania.

Not this year.

The reason for the mostly positive reception of Mania angles seems to be that unlike most of the year, they have the top of the card booked way in advance. By the Royal Rumble most years, there seem to be at least a couple of clear feuds building for Mania.

This year was different. The Rumble came and went and we were none the wiser. Orton won, but there wasn't any particular opponent that seemed logical for him to feud with. Most other wrestling fans I talk to all say the same thing. They'll probably get Mania just because it's Mania, but there's nothing in particular they're looking forward to.

The Orton-Hunter feud was been well done, up to a point. They took way too long to start it, and the backstage chase two weeks ago was awful, but the promos have been good. The problem here is although it's been a while since they actually feuded, it doesn't seem like it. We all know what to expect from this match. It'll likely be a good solid 3 1/2 star match which on any other card would leave you satisfied, but it lacks that something special you expect from the top match on a Mania card.

The Edge-Big Show-John Cena thing is an absolute mess. They seem to have changed their minds time after time with this one and we may see them change again. The problem is twofold. They've changed direction so many times that there isn't a coherent direction for the story any more.

An example of this is Cena loses in a match against Show for a shot at Edge's title, but gets a title shot re-match at the very next Raw. Huh? The other problem is we've seen the people involved feud so often before that it holds no mystery, no appeal. Putting them in a three-way only exacerbates the existing problem.

The Hardy brother feud is terrible. The problem with this one is even before they started, it was already at a disadvantage because no one wanted to see it. This problem can be overcome with a good storyline, but there's none to be found. The idea of Matt attacking Jeff because he was jealous or because his career was worthless while Jeff was shooting to the top is just great. Way to kill off any prestige for the ECW Title, the U.S. title, Tag titles, etc.

Also that Jeff won't fight him because "he's my brother" is laughable. They already wrestled in 2002. The idea that Matt claims responsibility for all the weirdness happening to Jeff, including the burning down of his house, is hideous, not to mention tasteless. The guy's dog died in the fire. To use it in an angle deserves nothing but scorn.

The other problem I have is the skit where Jeff was run off the road by a mystery car that he described in detail, but has never seen before is now revealed to have been driven by his brother. So he doesn't know his own brother's car now? Terrible.

I am truly amazed by their ability to screw up an easy match to book: Money in the Bank. Take six-to-eight young, athletic stars on the verge of main event-hood, put them in a ladder match with a World Title shot on the line, and you get consistently great matches. How about in order to improve it you include Kane and Mark Henry. WHAT? Now Kane, I kind of understand. He's the big guy there to catch people, but Henry? Exactly what ladder is he supposed to be climbing? I hope that sucker is seriously reinforced. Who's going get the last three spots? Khali, Funaki, and Hornswoggle? This could be a disaster.
