Georgia News: Decision on state regulations covering pro wrestling is delayed for 60-day feedback period Dec 18, 2007 - 5:16:54 PM
Wrestlers and wrestling promoters were elated on Tuesday when the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission decided to wait 60 days until rendering a decision on state regulations that would place tight restrictions and oversight on smaller wrestling promotions. This was the result of their Tuesday morning public meeting to discuss the proposed regulations.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Commission will seek more feedback and opinion from individuals inside the wrestling business during the 60-day waiting period before deciding whether to push forward on regulations.
Commission chairman J.J. Biello told the AJC, "We were looking for feedback. We're open to looking at the rules and changing some things as long as it fairly represents the interest of the state and the fighters, or entertainers in this case. Our main concern is the health and safety of the performers."
WWE would not be affected by the new regulations, as they have assets over $25 million, and are exempt from regulations. They are protected by a Georgia statute passed in 2005.
On Monday, WWE threatened to stop running shows in Georgia if the statute protecting them from regulations was removed. WWE attorney John Taylor told the AJC, "It's good they listened to people who know the business. These rules they proposed are ridiculous."
