"The Rock" Dwayne Johnson says he used steroids in college, but pleads ignorance that he didn't what he was doing. Johnson was on the Miami Hurricanes football team at the time.
"I tried it," Johnson told MTV in an interview to promote Race to Witch Mountain. "Me and my buddies tried it back in the day when I was 18 or 19. Didn't know what we were doing."
Johnson did not comment on steroid use in pro wrestling or whether he used steroids in WWE.
Johnson says the steroid culture of the late 1990s in pro wrestling and sports was fueled by too many people turning a blind eye to excessive steroid use. Johnson says the issue is gaining more awareness due to Alex Rodriguez's illegal steroid use finally coming to light.
"It's not as prevalent today in our sports as it was 10 years ago," Johnson said. "But we have to recognize that a culture was created where it was okay to do that, and a lot of team managers, owners, players who didn't do it would turn the other cheek. We recognize that, and now we have to institute stronger penalties, which we are doing."
