ROH News: Nigel McGuinness says whether he enjoys being a wrestler; comments on C.M. Punk and Colt Cabana

Ring of Honor champion Nigel McGuinness says not everyone loves what they do as a profession, but he's been fortunate to be in a great environment where he's happy being a wrestler, especially in ROH.
"There's very few people that can say they love going to the job," McGuinness told Jessi Virtusio in the Southtown Star paper. "You hear that they're not happy. I've always felt happy, and I've always felt that it's a great environment -- being around people you like from a professional standpoint."
McGuinnes says not having restrictions placed on them from a wrestling standpoint has created a good work environment for himself and colleagues. Although money isn't WWE level, there's more value in ROH, he says.
"No one is making the sort of money to retire," he said. "Everyone is doing what they love. I don't hear everyone complaining (sic) about having to do this or that."
Right now, the wrestling market is tough, he says, and everyone seems to be waiting for the next big thing to come around to boost wrestling, but he's waiting to see whether MMA sticks around over the long haul as a major sports entity.
"A lot of us are waiting for the next boom and hope it will come around," he said. "We're in an interesting situation now. People really understand what legitimate fighting is. If you look at Japan as an example, where MMA was really big a little earlier than it was here. It really started to hurt professional wrestling between the two. It's tough. (We're) just going to have to see what people really want for entertainment. Eventually people might get a bit bored of MMA."
McGuinness also commented on former WWE World champion C.M. Punk and Colt Cabana, who is going by Scotty Goldman in WWE. He said Punk is an inspiration to a lot of wrestlers trying to get their break in wrestling.
"If you look at Punk, I know a lot of guys told him not to go (to the WWE). He's an inspiration to all of us for what he's done," he said. "Cabana just gets it. He was one of the guys I always looked forward to wrestling. He's a phenomenal and great talent, and hopefully some of the guys in WWE will see it for themselves and get him back on TV."

FYI: Nigel McGuinness has held the ROH Title since October 2007, making him one of the longest-reigning ROH champions in company history. Samoa Joe held the ROH Title for nearly two years from 2003 until the end of 2004. Nigel's next ROH Title defense is this Friday in Dayton, Ohio against Tyler Black and Austin Aries, who ended Joe's near-two-year title reign in December '04.
