1/11 TNA Genesis PPV HOLT report: Details on what the live crowd saw and behind-the-scenes notes Jan 12, 2009 - 9:59:18 AM
A Torch VIP member sent in the following notes and observations from last night's TNA Genesis PPV in Charlotte.
-- Meet-and-greet: I attended a pre-show meet-and-greet set up by TNA staff. A group of about 20 of us were led through the backstage area and placed in an un-used room. A string of TNA wrestlers were funneled through for photographs and handshakes. By far, the most personable and friendly were Consequences Creed and Jay Lethal.
-- Vince Russo watched almost the entire show from a floor seat in the crowd. Very few people recognized him.
-- Johnny Fairplay (Jon Dalton) and a stunning girl (who I assume was his "Top Model" wife) were seated in the front row.
-- Sabin vs. Shelley. Jaw-droppingly great match. I saw one of ROH's Match of the Year candidates last year (McGuinness vs. Aries at Supercard of Honor 3), and I actually liked Sabin vs. Shelley more. It took a few minutes for the crowd to warm up to what they were seeing (Cricket Arena is by no means the Hammerstein Ballroom), but the crowd popped huge for the nearfalls and gave both wrestlers huge ovations after the finish. I'm thrilled to have seen a match of this caliber.
-- Beer Money, Inc was very popular with the live crowd. I saw more signs for Beer Money, Inc. than any other wrestler.
-- Knockouts match was dreadful.
-- Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Jarrett. The crowd was hotter for this than anything else on the card, by far. By the finish, the crowd had turned on Jeff completely, to the point of chanting "Hey, hey, hey goodbye" to him as he was being stretchered out of the building. Angle sure takes a lot of risks for a guy with a previously broken neck.
-- Kip James. What a horrible substitution. The crowd wasn't expecting Ric Flair as the substitution, but James was just about the worst-case scenario.
Keep up the great work on the VIP site!
