By James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

TNA Impact Wrestling on Thursday, March 1 scored a 0.99 rating off a first hour 1.02 rating and second hour 0.97 rating.

Impact peaked at the beginning of the show with a 1.08 rating and steadily dropped off throughout the first hour. Impact then hit a second hour peak with a 1.04 rating at the top of the hour and steadily dropped off again throughout the second hour.

Impact bottomed out with a 0.90 rating in Q8, which was 24 percent below the 2011-Q8 average. It was easily the lowest Q8 rating of 2012 & 2011. The next lowest Q8 rating was a 0.97 in August 2011.

All quarter-hours were below the corresponding 2011 average. The range was 8-24 percent.

First Hour Break Down

Q1: Impact opened with a show-high 1.08 rating, which was the first sign of trouble. The segment included Kurt Angle with an in-ring promo, Robert Roode backstage, and one commercial break. (down 8.3% vs. 2011-Q1 average)

Q2: Impact dipped to a 1.03 rating for the A.J. Styles vs. Kazarian/Daniels gauntlet match, plus one commercial break. (down 10.9% vs. 2011-Q2 average)

Q3: Impact dipped slightly again to a 1.01 rating for a Knockouts-heavy segment that included ODB vs. Madison Rayne in the ring, plus one commercial break. (down 13.4% vs. 2011-Q3 average)

Q4: Impact dipped again to a 0.97 rating for an Immortal segment, the first-half of Austin Aries and Robert Roode in the ring, and two full commercial breaks, which dragged down the quarter-hour. (down 13.8% vs. 2011-Q4 average)

Second Hour Break Down

Q5: Impact rebounded to a second-hour-high 1.04 rating for the second-half of Aries and Roode having a "sit-in," one commercial break, and the first-half of Zema Ion vs. Shannon Moore. (down 15.6% vs. 2011-Q5 average for the typical highest-rated segment of the show.)

Q6: Impact dipped to a 0.99 rating for the second-half of Ion vs. Moore, a Knockouts tag match, and one-and-a-half commercial breaks, which likely hurt the rating. (down 14.6% vs. 2011-Q6 average)

Q7: Impact dipped again to a 0.93 rating for the first-half of the main event six-man tag match, plus one-and-a-half commercial breaks. This was around the time the Miami Heat NBA game started on TNT after the conclusion of the Magic-Thunder game. (down 18.4% vs. 2011-Q7 average)

Q8: Impact dipped to a show-low 0.90 rating for the final portion of the lengthy main event tag match up against the first quarter of the Heat NBA game. (down 23.6% vs. 2011-Q8 average)

Caldwell's Analysis: Viewers simply lost interest in this show as it went along, and even the top-of-the-second-hour segment couldn't retain viewers. TNA lost viewers at some point to other programming (likely the NBA) or just other things and they didn't come back. Last week, TNA likely benefited from the NBA because it brought viewers to their TV sets for Jeremy Lin of the Knicks, but the game became a blow-out at the start of the fourth quarter right at the start of TNA Impact.

Big picture, whether it's because TNA has burnt out the audience on the same guys in the main event each week (even with new blood in there this week) or the audience needs time to get used to a new kind of TNA program after being fed the same going-nowhere product for several years, this is one of those "growing pains" weeks for Impact.
