WWE Smackdown review
December 14, 2007
Taped 12/11/07 in Boston, Mass.
Aired on The CW
Report by Greg Parks, Torch Team Contributor

-Smackdown Open.

-Edge came out first, asking for everyone’s attention. That “Rated R” hockey jersey does nothing for him. He re-introduced Vickie Guerrero. Vickie was wheeled out by Teddy Long, and was still sporting a neck brace. Edge rolled the footage of Undertaker pile-driving her. Edge said that disgusts him. Vickie admitted she wasn’t doing well, both physically and mentally. She said she has thought about getting psychological help. She talked about the main event at Armageddon, and said all three superstars would be in action tonight. First up: Edge. Edge said he wasn’t prepared, but Guerrero’s decision was final. Vickie told Teddy to go back and start Edge’s music. Ah, so THAT’S who does it.

1- EDGE vs. FUNAKI

I KNEW it was going to be Funaki! Edge was slightly bemused when Funaki’s music played. JBL tried to talk Funaki up as if Edge beating him tonight would be a feather in his cap. Edge locked up and then gave a clean break. Edge began hammering away at the former Kaientai member after a boot to the jaw. Funaki came back with a strike to the mid-section, then a bulldog. Edge reversed an Irish whip, but Funaki got the boots up on a charge. He tried a tornado DDT, but Edge shoved him off. He then hit a DDT of his own. Spear ended it for Edge.

WINNER: Edge at 2:27. You could see it coming a mile away. But it plays nicely into the storyline.

Vickie, who was still near the entrance, asked for a round of applause for Edge. She then announced that Batista would face Kane in a Last Man Standing Match. Undertaker will take on Mark Henry and Big Daddy V in a handicap match. Vickie ordered Teddy to take her back to her office; he paused at first, then relented.

-An ad for WWE’s Tribute to the Troops, airing Christmas Eve on Raw.

2- MICHELLE MCCOOL & KELLY KELLY vs. VICTORIA & LAYLA

A WWE Mobile “exclusive” showed Chuck going crazy backstage after his match with Noble last week, blaming his loss on Michelle. Kenny Dykstra was at ringside for Victoria. Michelle worked a headlock against Victoria early on. Michelle back-flipped out of a wrist-lock and arm-dragged Victoria down in a nice sequence. McCool tagged out and Kelly nailed Victoria with a crossbody for two. Kelly fought out of a fireman’s carry and was able to tag Michelle. She hit Victoria with a high kick, and the pin was broken up by Layla. That distraction allowed Kenny to trip Michelle. That brought Chuck Palumbo out on his bike, and he chased Kenny around ringside on it. But that distraction allowed Victoria to roll up Michelle for the three-count.

WINNERS: Victoria & Layla at 2:58. They smartly kept Layla (and Kelly, for that matter) out of the ring for the bulk. Michelle is really improving.

-Kane faces Batista in a Last Man Standing Match later on. Rey Mysterio, though, is in action next.

[Commercial Break]

-Chuck was backstage in a rager, when Michelle McCool came up to him and told him he cost her her match. He acknowledged that he can’t do anything right lately and was very upset about Michelle having to go on a date with Jamie Noble because he lost. He punched a hole in the wall as Michelle looked concerned. Are we going to see Michelle shack up with Jamie and become the new Nidia?

-MVP joined Michael Cole and JBL at the broadcast table.

3- REY MYSTERIO VS. KENNY DYKSTRA

Dykstra worked the right arm of Rey at the outset. Rey, though, hit a hurricanrana, and kicked at Kenny’s leg. Dykstra tripped Rey coming off the ropes and stomped him into the mat. Rey countered a powerbomb into a 619, then hit a springboard legdrop for the win.

WINNER: Mysterio at 2:40.

After the match, MVP got in the ring and talked about their match this Sunday. MVP let Rey hold the belt and said he wanted the best man to win at Armageddon. He offered Rey a handshake, but Rey wouldn’t bite. In a nice move, Kenny Dykstra struggled to his feet, MVP made a big deal about in his body language; Rey turned to see what he was looking at and MVP nailed him with the belt.

-Later on tonight, Undertaker takes on Big Daddy V and Mark Henry in a handicap match. Kane vs. Batista in a Last Man Standing Match is up next.

[Commercial Break]

4- KANE vs. BATISTA- LAST MAN STANDING MATCH

Kane slammed Batista, then dropped an elbow. Batista fought back and clotheslined Kane over the top rope. Batista pushed Kane into the ringpost, then bodyslammed him onto the mat. Back in, Kane was able to reverse an Irish whip and hit Batista in the corner with a clothesline. He then side-slammed the champ. Batista hit a spinebuster on Kane then set up for the Batista Bomb, but Kane back-dropped Batista instead. He got Batista up and chokeslammed him. Referee Jimmy Korderas started the count and got to eight before Batista got up. Kane got on the second rope to pound on Batista in the corner, but Batista walked out and powerbombed him. Batista went to the top, but Kane went up and suplexed him off. Double clothesline led us to the break.

[Commercial Break]

Batista was sent over the top rope by Kane as the show returned. The two fought on the outside, using the barricade and ring post as weapons. Kane kicked Batista over the barricade and into the fans. Kane grabbed a chair but was speared by Batista before he could use it. It took Kane to nine to get up from that one. Kane reversed a whip and sent Batista into the ringside steps. The Big Red Machine hit Batista with one of the monitors from the announce table. Batista got up at eight, but Kane clotheslined him back to the ground. The steps were set up for Kane to chokeslam Batista on them, but Batista elbowed out. He hit a spinebuster to Kane on the announce table. Out of nowhere, Edge came out and speared Batista. Korderas was counting both men down. As Batista got up, Edge tried to put him down again, but Batista back-dropped him and beat the count, while Kane could not.

WINNER: Batista at 14:48. A slow match, as most LMS matches are, but there wasn’t a lot of drama or hot action.

Edge hit Batista in the back with a chair after the match, then headed to the back.

-Coming up later, Big Daddy V & Mark Henry face Undertaker later tonight.

[Commercial Break]

-The last few moments of the last match were shown.

-Backstage, Edge was with Vickie, asking if he could get her anything. She asked for two aspirin and some coffee. Edge ordered Teddy Long to get it for her. Then they made out (Edge and Vickie, not Edge and Teddy) much to the disgust of the fans.

-The Raw Rebound aired.

-Festus and Jesse made their entrance, as Festus is in singles competition next.

[Commercial Break]

5- FESTUS vs. THE MIZ

Festus hit those huge right hands and then landed on Miz. High back-body drop was next. Miz went after Festus’ leg but Festus blocked some punches and knocked him away. Miz grabbed Festus’ tights and sent him to the outside of the ring. As Festus got back in, Miz held onto a headlock. Miz went for a cross-body, but Festus caught him. John Morrison came to ringside and was on the apron, and Festus used Miz’s legs to knock Morrison off. He then hit that flapjack move for the win.

WINNER: Festus at 2:42. A good win for the flavor-of-the-month tag team, to advance that storyline.

Teddy Long’s music hit and he came down to the ring as Jesse and Festus left the ringside area. Morrison and Miz left as well. Huh, I thought he was going to add a tag match for the PPV or something. He was asked to come to the ring to read the following announcement: The next scheduled match will feature the former World Heavyweight Champion, Great Khali. His opponent: Hornswoggle. Boy, they must think they can’t go to this well often enough.

[Commercial Break]

6- HORNSWOGGLE vs. GREAT KHALI

Before the match started, Finlay came out. He started hammering at Khali and even used the shillaleigh. While he was pounding at Khali, Runjin Singh came in and took Hornswoggle hostage. Finlay wasn’t too scared, as he just clotheslined Singh and threw him out of the ring. That allowed Khali to recover and hit Finlay over the head with a chop. Then he picked up Finlay by the throat and dropped him. Khali’s music played, so I guess that’s it.

WINNER: Match never started.

-Tonight, Undertaker faces Big Daddy V and Mark Henry in a handicap match.

[Commercial Break]

-Ric Flair returns to Smackdown next week. Based on that video package, they’re going ahead with the Flair angle.

-Michelle McCool was talking with Kelly Kelly outside Michelle’s locker room. She didn’t know what to do about Chuck. As they walked into her locker room, there were balloons and flowers all over the place. Noble then showed up and saw McCool’s black eye. Noble got mad, ready to blame Palumbo, but Michelle assured him it happened over in Europe. Their date is tonight, I guess. Kelly suggested they go on a double-date with her and Balls. Noble wasn’t a fan of that.

-Cole and JBL ran down the Armageddon card.

-Mark Henry, Big Daddy V and Matt Striker were walking backstage, heading to the ring for the main event.

[Commercial Break]

6- BIG DADDY V & MARK HENRY vs. THE UNDERTAKER- HANDICAP MATCH

Taker started with V, and Undertaker was floating and stinging early on. But Mark Henry came in and the heels backed Taker into the corner and beat on him. Henry tried to suplex Taker to the outside, but Taker blocked. Taker kicked V down, then hit a big boot on Henry as well. Taker legdropped Henry as he was draped over the apron. Big Daddy V met Taker on the outside to attack. Taker countered and pushed the former Viscera into the ring post. Henry grabbed Taker back in the ring, and squeezed him in a bearhug. V then hit a Samoan drop on Taker. That got only a two count. Undertaker was leaning against the ropes and kicking each man as they came near. He then ran from corner to corner, splashing each man three times. He grabbed V’s throat for a chokeslam, and Henry as well. That worked about as well as you’d expect. V hit a back elbow after an whip by Henry. Henry laid the shoulders into Undertaker in the corner and held him there as V splashed both men. Cole noted Henry took one for the team there. V implored Henry to do the same, but it took Mark a while to recover, and Undertaker escaped as Henry just splashed V. Undertaker chokeslammed Henry to get the win.

WINNER: Undertaker at 5:50. Questionable decision to have Taker go over two of your bigger heels cleanly.

V attacked after the match. Taker fought off both men until V hit the two-handed slam. They did a two-man Torture Rack on The Phenom. Edge came to the ring and surveyed the damage. He mocked Taker as Taker tried to sit up, but couldn’t.
