When I saw a six-man tag match advertised at the top of the show, I admit I was a tad bit excited for the ECW offering on Tuesday night. But, after a so-so ECW Title match that didn't hold my interest, a Finlay squash, and Ricky Ortiz waving a rally towel backstage, the momentum slowly died down to where the main event was just OK. Just fine.
Part of the problem is that the ECW main event had subtraction by addition. Stay with me. Adding Jack Swagger to the stellar Raw tag match was a gain of let's say five points. Adding Ricky O. to the match as the sixth man in the mix was a loss of about 100 points. So, we end up with a net loss of 95 points, deeming the ECW TV main event a weak effort. I know Ricky is trying (I think), but it just seems so forced. ECW needs Swagger vs. Hardy focus all day, every day. Oh, and a Mark Henry poem. Part 2 needs to occur next week two days before Christmas.

Good show this week, but the question must be asked: Why does Matt Hardy perpetually seem to be the champion in need of challengers? This week, Chavo was thrown into the mix for a good ten-minute TV match, but I'm honestly trying to think of anybody other than Mark Henry or Finlay that Hardy's been involved with, and Finlay was just a casual thing anyway. I'd love to see Jack Swagger enter the equation, but I worry that if they do it too soon and he tanks, they'll balk at pushing him, which would be even more criminal.
Meanwhile, I really liked the main event, because it drove home the point that, little by little, the midcard is beginning to approach being taken off life support. Think about it; excellent Punk-Mysterio match at Armageddon with an IC title shot, not to mention all the publicity surrounding Miz and Morrison getting the belts back on Raw and last night's show. There's now enough depth of mid-card talent to push it again. Also, this might seem like a random thought, but does anyone else think MVP would be greatly served by a move to ECW? I know we'd get more Hardy-MVP matches as a result, but those were always quality, and he seems like a good fit for the show to me. Not like he's doing anything else, anyway.

This week's show was on par with recent editions of ECW. I was afraid when Matt Hardy started off the night holding a microphone, and was even more petrified when Chavo (where has he been?) came down to the ring with mic in hand as well. Fortunately, these two can wrestler considerably better than they can talk, and gave us a solid, 10 minute ECW Championship match. The bit with Hornswoggle and Matt Striker was hilarious. I'm no fan of his, but Hornswoggle remains one of the more popular acts on WWE television, and the writers will continue to use him in useless, usually hit-or-miss comedy segments. This week's segment was a hit.
Mark Henry continues to impress me with his promo skills. His vocal delivery and facial expressions make him look like a legitimate tough guy. One question: why is Tony Atlas employed again? Mark Henry is a viable act all by himself; Henry doesn't need a manager to get him over. Atlas stands in the background, and there are many times I forget he's even there. Atlas needs to either play more of a mouthpiece or get more involved with Henry's matches before I consider him a positive addition to Henry's character.
The main event was decent, even if a little disappointing considering the six involved. Ricky Ortiz is trying, but I don't see anything in him right now. There is nothing redeemable about him except his charisma, and even that seems a little forced and awkward. It's nice to see CM Punk and Kofi Kingston return to ECW for one night, and John Morrison and the Miz are still the highlight of the show. Unfortunately, the six men involved didn't really kick the match into high gear like I expected them to. On the bright side, Jack Swagger came off as the star, and he looks to be next in line for an ECW Title match. I can't wait to see what these two can come up with. Thumbs up from me.
