ECW on Sci-Fi review
March 10, 2009
Taped 3/9/09 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Aired on Sci-Fi Network
-WWE Open.
-Tonight, a tri-branded Battle Royal, where the winner will qualify for a spot in the Money-in-the-Bank Ladder Match at Wrestlemania. They showed a graphic, but it went by too quickly for me to see who was all in it.
-ECW Open.
1- THE MIZ vs. PRIMO
They showed exclusive footage of last week's WWE.com Dirt Sheet. I think this is the same one we saw on Smackdown. John Morrison joined the broadcast table as guest commentator. They've apparently stopped billing them as Primo and Carlito "Colon," as neither the chyron nor Tony Chimel added the last name. Don't know how long that's been going on for. Also, Carlito joined the commentary team as well, with the Bellas at his side.
Miz held onto a side-headlock, then Primo switched with him. Primo hit some high impact offense, but could only get a one-count. Morrison and Carlito, as expected, spent most of the match arguing. Primo got knocked out of the ring and was in pain as the show went to break.
[Commercial Break]
Back from break, Primo was working out of a rear chinlock from Miz. Primo to the top where he hit a cross-body for two. He missed a diving version of that move coming off the ropes though and ended up outside the ring, right near the announcers. One of the Bella twins showed concern for Primo. Striker noted that the Colons were the first brothers since the Bashams to hold the tag titles. Wow, names I never thought I'd hear on WWE TV again. Miz choked Primo on the bottom rope and got a two-count. Morrison has been hilarious on commentary. Carlito too, to a lesser extent. Morrison made fun of Primo's doughy mid-section. Primo got out of a bad spot on the top rope and gave an electric chair to Miz. Primo started hitting on all cylinders, showing lots of energy and the crowd got behind him. Face-buster by Miz that landed Primo on the top of his head. Each man got a roll-up for near falls. Primo went for a springboard cross-body, but Miz turned it into a slam for two. Miz missed his corner clothesline and Primo hit a Backstabber for the win.
WINNER: Primo, at 11:54. Very good, entertaining match that had a really hot crowd to go with it.
-A video package aired on the lead heel from "12 Rounds."
-Backstage, Ranjin Singh was talking to Great Khali. He's in the Battle Royal later tonight.
[Commercial Break]
2- TYSON KIDD vs. DJ GABRIEL
Both men were seconded by their respective ladies. Hard uppercut by Gabriel, then a forearm. Kidd backed himself into the buckle. He goaded Gabriel in and hit a drop toe-hold into the turnbuckle. To the outside, hard kick to the head by Kidd. More hard kicks in the ring by Kidd, but it couldn't get him the pin. A version of the Camel Clutch was applied by Kidd. Wheel-barrow slam by Gabriel, which got a two-count. Vertical suplex by Gabriel, but Kidd snuck out the back and landed on the apron, bending Gabriel's neck on the top rope. He then hit the springboard elbowdrop for three.
WINNER: Kidd, at 2:29. Impressive while it lasted; both guys looked good. The pecking order seems clear here though.
-A tri-branded Battle Royal will allow us to find out the next man to participate in the MITB Match at Wrestlemania. I count 16 in that photo. Anyway, it's still to come tonight.
[Commercial Break]
-Evan Bourne returns to ECW next week.
-We saw what happened with Randy Orton and Triple H last night.
-Cryme Tyme, Vladimir Kozlov, Christian (it's sad that he's being lumped in with guys like Dolph Ziggler and Goldust), William Regal and The Great Khali made their entrances for the battle royal.
[Commercial Break]
-A video package on Wrestlemania IX aired.
3- 16-MAN BATTLE ROYAL- MONEY-IN-THE-BANK QUALIFYING MATCH
Jimmy Wang Yang, Goldust (come on, the best part is his entrance and they don't even show that?), Kung Fu Naki, Ricky Ortiz, Dolph Ziggler, Chavo Guerrero, Paul Burchill, Tommy Dreamer, and Charlie Haas (as himself) were all in the ring out of break as R-Truth made his entrance. Ortiz was tossed immediately by Khali and seconds later, Funaki by Kozlov. Khali tossed Kozlov and everyone ganged up on Khali and tossed him right after. This is all in the first minute or so. Yang was tossed and Ziggler dropkicked Goldust out while Haas held the top rope down. Cryme Tyme dumped Ziggler and Haas. All those eliminations less than two minutes into the match. CT got rid of Burchill as the show went to break with JTG throwing out Shad after a celebration.
[Commercial Break]
It was down to Christian, Chavo, William Regal, R-Truth and Tommy Dreamer upon return. DDT by Dreamer on Regal. Dreamer tossed Regal, who held on an pulled Dreamer out at about 8:00. Down to four now with R-Truth missing a side-kick, but staying in the ring. Chavo did end up throwing him out almost at 9:00. Christian held on by his toes as Chavo had him over the top, but he was able to make it back in. He went for the Killswitch, but Regal broke it up. Regal overhead suplexed Christian into Chavo. Regal got tossed by Christian on a back body-drop. Christian and Chavo are the final two. Three Amigos by Chavo on Christian. Chavo was thrown over but held on. Chavo tried to pull him over as he was on the apron. Christian stayed in the ring but he was almost able to get Christian over. His upper torso was between the top and middle rope and Chavo pulled him back, but Christian's legs hit Chavo in the head and knocked him out.
WINNER: Christian, at 11:55. I detest "Abandon Ship" battle royals like this. Unless they contain legends who can't work anymore. Still, it was good to see Christian get the win. I was worried they'd go with Chavo there for a second.
-A plug for Raw next Monday aired to finish the show.
