THE ABSURDITY OF IT ALL: TNA Turning Point PPV preview - Sting vs. A.J. Styles, Another meaningless X Division match, Abyss or Christian in a suit and tie?

By Shane McKinley, PWTorch Specialist

Turning Point comes your way live on PPV this Sunday! For months, fans have been slogging their way through overly obvious and painful "set ups." The payoff? Main Event Mafia versus the Young Lions. I would like for TNA to have a really solid PPV here to encourage fans who gave up on the product to return back.

X Division Championship Seeding Match

Sonjay Dutt, Eric Young, Jay Lethal, Consquences Creed, Petey Williams, Jimmy Rave, Homicide, Doug Williams, Tanahashi, and Volador repeat the same match these lucky dudes have been having nearly every TNA PPV: a spotfest with nothing going into it and nothing coming out of it. Jay Lethal won the steel birdcage match at Bound for Glory, and his reward was a two-minute loss to the X Division champion Bashir. So who knows what is in store for the winner. When will the X Division actually becomes meaningful again?

VERDICT: In The Middle Of Absurdity

Kong & Raisha Saeed vs. Taylor Wilde & Roxxi

Wasn't Rhaka Khan supposed to be in here to take the place of Raisha Saeed? Or something? Anyways, Kong and her new partner wins. Considering the state of the knockout division right now, this will probably last about five minutes total. Don't know what to expect from this match, as the Knockouts division has not had a good match on TNA PPVs lately.

VERDICT: Very Absurd

Grudge Match: Rhino vs. Bashir

Main question: Can you deport somebody who was born here? And what is the actual "grudge?" Weak scuffles in the back don't convince me that Rhino has a serious beef with Bashir. You would figure that Rhino would be somehow involved in the whole "MEM vs. Young Lions" bit, so this match just seems something to fill time until next month. Bashir will get the win here, but will get a Gore after the match for his troubles.

VERDICT: Very Absurd

Abyss vs. Kurt Angle - Falls Count Anywhere

Angle wants to beat up Jeff Jarrett's daughters. Double J responds by sending Abyss to teach Angle a lesson. Abyss for some reason has a beef with Angle because his buddy Matt Morgan lost to Angle. The Falls Count Anywhere might signify a spot where yet again Abyss takes a crazy bump. I would like it for Abyss to join MEM. In this match, Morgan would be the one to take the crazy bump, thus setting up a Morgan vs. Abyss feud. Abyss could join MEM and get a makeover. Hair cut. Nice suits. No more shrieking in agony in promos. And would be the one MEM member who would fit the "Hardcore" bit. The character of Abyss could then join the 21st century. Considering their previous match, this is something to look forward too, if you can forget the whole "third Degree Burns" silliness. Heck, Team 3D might even show up to join MEM.

VERDICT: A Little Absurd

The Motor City Machineguns vs. Beer Money for The Tag Team Championship

MCMG back in an actual match on a TNA PPV! All right! I believe that it is time for Beer Money to lose the belts, since frankly they are doing nothing with it. LAX was supposed to be a big deal months ago, but now it is the MCMG who are the number one contenders. So the whole thing is see-through, but at least MCMG gets a real PPV match. MCMG and John Cena must know some people to get their title shots. Despite this, these two tag teams can look big here.

VERDICT: A Little Absurd

Christian Cage vs. Champion Booker T

Yes, TNA labels Booker T as "champion." Don't doubt what Christian can do, but the same cannot be said for Booker, considering his work on Impact lately. The whole stinker of this match is the awful "if Christian loses, he has to join MEM." Considering the "no re-match clause" for Joe vs. Sting for the TNA championship last month, TNA is doing a horrible job of keeping things believable in this bit. Christian winning the legends championship right now would mean zip. This is an example of how the outside stipulation of the match hurts the actual hype for the match.

VERDICT: Very Absurd

Samoa Joe vs. Kevin Nash

Joe wants a piece of Nash for betraying him. Nash actually had the gall to somehow bring the Scott Hall no-show into play. Not excited to see either man wrestle each other. The only thing that could come out of this match is that Joe gets a convincing win over Nash. If Joe once again loses, he will lose a lot of ground. I admit it, I am a sucker for this whole "Oh no, Mr. Good Guy has joined MEM! How could he?" Yes, we are treading the same ground during the WCW vs. NWO years, but at least now a lot of meaningless stuff can seem bigger if they are plugged into the MEM vs. Young Lions bit. Is this a main event? Yes. But not a huge one.

VERDICT: In The Middle Of Absurdity

A.J. Styles vs. Sting for TNA Championship

Nice work done by both men in hyping up this match. This is the match on the PPV that fans can sink their teeth into. Sting has oddly brought up things about A.J.'s father, and there is a lot to advance in this match. Sting, after slogging his way for a good portion of the last three months, is looking very good. Will A.J. become champion? Will Sting lose, take a beating from MEM, and join the Young Lions? I get giddy thinking what Styles and Sting can do in the ring.

VERDICT: Not Absurd
