Excuse me, pardon me
I was as impressed as anyone with Chris Jericho's opening promo. The content was solid and the tone reminded me of his strong mic work earlier this year related to his battles with Shawn Michaels. I was even more impressed that he performed much of it while walking to the ring. Collecting your thoughts is tough enough, and then add the pressure of live TV, and you have an even greater challenge. Plus, the early parts of his comments were delivered while walking down the steps. Even if you've never visited that arena, you've probably experienced the steep steps at a live event. Many beverages have lost their lives in an attempt to return to my seat. Jericho delivering his monologue without missing a beat is quite an accomplishment considering many others couldn't deliver a shorter promo while standing safely in the middle of the ring.
Credit also goes to Jericho's security force who played their parts as well as can be expected considering he was bigger than most of the people assigned to protect him. My favorite was the "enforcer" in the front on the left of your TV screen. As they leave the concourse area and begin to descend the steps, watch as he does the classic secret service move of pressing his finger into his ear so he apparently can hear a vital message being relayed to him. Upon closer examination, there's just one problem with this. He doesn't have an earpiece in, so he repeats the motion with the other ear. The voices in my head tell me that the coast is clear, Mr. Jericho.
That first step will get you every time
As the show continued, it was clear that Rey Mysterio's injury was a part of a storyline, but count me among the ones who were fooled by his fall on the ramp after going up against Mike Knox. It was a very convincing slip and we usually see a lengthier brawl if someone confronts someone in this manner. If they hadn't gone to Layla backstage with her comments on Mysterio's place in the Intercontinental Title tournament, I would have been sure that it was an accidental injury. It was also a smart use of Knox considering he is the one who attacked Mysterio's friend Evan Bourne last month.
...and the winner for Best Groin Pull
Santino Marella obviously was the comic relief for the evening, earning a well-placed bag of ice for his efforts, but he apparently has his sights set on other winnings. He and Beth Phoenix were looking ahead to next week's Slammy's, insisting that they would sweep the awards. Since they aren't nominated in every category, we'll assume their planning to win all the categories in which they do have a nomination. If they want to win the most in one year, the number to beat is six. Shawn Michaels took him six trophies in 1996 including "Match of the Year" with Razor Ramon, "Leader of the New Generation," and "Squared Circle Shocker" for his collapse in the middle of the ring. Bret Hart won three awards that year and Sunny took home a pair of trophies. Hopefully they'll show highlights of past Slammys Award Presentations on next week's three hour Raw.
Top 10 People Named McMahon
Congratulations to Stephanie McMahon who was named one of the "20 Women to Watch" in CableFax magazine. This comes on the heels of Linda McMahon being named one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Cable" by CableFax. I'm not sure what Shane has to do to get some love from the CableFax people. "Top 32 People Named Shane," "Best 108 People to Wrestle Against Steve Blackman," and "Top 6 People Who Have Been Seen With The Mean Street Posse" are all possible suggestions.
For the record, Shane was named one of the "50 Most Powerful Men Under 42" by Details Magazine in their annual "power" issue in 2006. I would still like to see the Mean Street Posse list.
Silent Night. Please.
We had a precious few seconds to "enjoy" Jillian Hall's work on the microphone this week, but after listening to it repeatedly, it appears that she was singing "I Know What You Want" from Mariah Carey. If I'm wrong on this one, I'll take the beating, but please don't make me listen to it again.
The good news is, they still mention you...
Most of you probably heard Stephanie McMahon announcing next week's matches with the graphics not matching what she was saying. She quickly covered for the mistake by insisting that she "pulled an Adamle" an obvious reference to former announcer and General Manager Mike Adamle who was well known for his errors. While the phrase "pull an Adamle" hasn't reached the mainstream yet, there is a precedent for this. If you flip-flop the first letter or letters of a pair of words, such as accidentally saying "a blushing crow" instead of "a crushing blow," that is referred to as a "Spoonerism," named after William Spooner who was known for frequently doing this.
I didn't catch his name
Whatever your opinion of Dolph Ziggler might be, he does have a strong amateur background. He holds the record for most pins at St. Edward H.S. in Lakewood, Ohio and he did hold the record for most wins at Kent State, with a record of 121-31. According to the Golden Flashes website, Alex Carmago now holds the mark with 126 victories.
Hi, I'm Alex Carmago.
It doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
