Welcome to the TNA Impact edition of Under the Microscope. We're here to review all those little observations and tidbits you may have missed. This is not a detailed recap of the show, but a review for those of you that saw the show but didn't actually "watch" it.
After last week we know that Rhino padded his savings account, Tina Fay is on her way to see the Beautiful People and The Turkey Bowl needs to go. But what else is there to notice? Let's see what we can spot. Cue the opening pyro.
To start tonight's show, the Main Event Mafia calls out Team 3D and demands for them to reverse their decision of standing with the Front Line last week. While Brother Ray is wearing a generic TNA shirt, Brother Devon's shirt is a shirt that simply states "Get Juiced." With all the steroid talks and suspensions in wrestling it may seem Devon is trying to make some sort of statement or rebel against steroids in some way with this shirt. But this is not the case. Devon opened a smoothie store, 3D Smoothies, in his Florida hometown with Brother Ray a couple of years ago. Obviously this is a shirt to promote his store, not some type of steroid statement. Either that, or he's a big fan of Juventud "the Juice" Guerrera.
In all likelihood, Kurt Angle will defeat Rhino this Sunday and avoid being axed by TNA. It seems obvious that Angle will remain on TV to build up a future rematch versus Jeff Jarrett. Plus, I doubt Rhino will go over Kurt Angle in a PPV match. Even though us smart fans can pretty much predict the outcome of that match, at least TNA is giving us that small though of Angle losing his match. The videos of the top five Angle moments in TNA are a nice touch, as they are building up the fact that he may actually lose and be forced to leave TNA. It is Vince Russo, so a swerve may be in the works.
Team 3D consoles Samoa Joe after his loss to Booker T as Brother Ray gives him a pep talk about winning and losing titles. He proceeds to tell Joe that Ric Flair is a 16 time world champ, therefore he lost it 15 times. He also tells him 3D are 20 time tag champs, thus they've lost them 19 times. The math doesn't seem to work out there. By Brother Ray's thinking, Flair must still be a World champ and 3D are still tag champs. Flair has actually lost the world title 16 times and 3D the tag titles 20 times.
We get a brief video clip tonight on Christy Hemme and her quest for Awesome Kong's Knockout Title. Hemme is a former diva search winner in WWE, and is not known for having the greatest in-ring wrestling skills. During the video we see how Hemme has been training with A.J. Styles for the last three months to improve her wrestling skills. While I can think of no one better than Styles if you want to learn how to work in the ring, he shouldn't have been the first choice from a logic standpoint. Last I knew, Hemme was still the valet of the Rock 'n Rave Infection. Either they are not very good trainers, or Hemme simply saw their won-lost record and looked elsewhere for help.
TNA really wants you to purchase their Final Resolution PPV this Sunday. As Kurt Angle heads down a hallway backstage to speak to Mick Foley about his enforcer status this Sunday, we see that the walls are lined with framed posters. During Angle's short walk there are six posters of the same Final Resolution PPV promotional poster featuring the Main Event Mafia. It's smart marketing to put promotional posters in the background during backstage segments, but six posters in 20 feet is just overkill.
In all the years of professional wrestling on TV, all the different promotions, all the various types of titles and all the different wrestlers who have held those titles, Sting may be the first one who doesn't carry his title around with him 24/7. During his interview with Jeremy Borash you can see the title on display in the background, but during most MEM segments Sting does not have the World Title with him. This is a nice change of pace, as all title holders are usually shown on TV with their titles draped over their shoulder. Whether they are in front of a mic for a backstage promo, or whether the camera catches them hanging out or walking backstage, it seems title holders always have their title slung over their shoulder when not in the ring.
Jeff Jarrett is no doubt supporting Rhino in his match vs. Kurt Angle this Sunday. Jarrett is on the side of the Front Line and wants Angle gone from TNA. It was a small catch, but Jarrett's outfit tonight may have been subliminally telling us this as well. Jarrett had a small R logo on the chest of his dress shirt. The R could stand for Rhino as it was in the same font that Rhino has on his wrestling gear.
We get a new little touch to Impact tonight, as we see new little graphics on the bottom of the screen telling us what's coming up on the show. In six minutes, Angle confronts Jarrett! In seven minutes, Rhino vs. Sting! While I have no problem with this new little feature, it would be nice to take it a step further and give us useful information. In 49 minutes, the next match! In 15 seconds, a bad Kip James segment! In ten minutes, a rambling Scott Steiner promo!
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new bleep counter record for tonight's Impact. Two from Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner and ODB, one from Kurt Angle and five from Roxxi gives us a grand total of twelve for tonight's episode. Holy bleep!
Numbers crunched harder than an unprotected chair shot to the head: The past two weeks we've crunched some numbers about TNA and their PPVs over the course of their first 49 with number 50 coming up this Sunday. We've looked at A.J. Styles's longevity and some interesting won-lost records the past couple weeks, but what other numbers are there to notice about TNA and their PPVs?
Championship matches are a necessity for a PPV card, but not every title is defended on every show. Over those first 49 PPVs title matches stand at 39 for the World Title, 38 for the X Division title, and 33 for the Tag Team Titles. The Knockout's Title has been around for the last 14 PPVs, being defended on nine of those cards. On the individual leader boards, Christian Cage heads the pack with 15 World Title matches, with Kurt Angle coming in second at twelve. Tag Title matches are frequented most by James Storm, who has 15. LAX members Homicide and Hernandez are a close second with 13 a piece. In the X Division, Chris Sabin and Christopher Daniels/Curry Man lead the way with 13 X Title matches. And if you're a fan of the Knockouts, Awesome Kong is your main title match participant with seven.
Gimmick matches seem to be another necessity for a TNA PPV. TNA has given us 407 matches on a monthly PPV so far, with 130 of them (or almost one third) being some type of gimmick match. No surprise here, as Abyss leads the way in that category with 33 of his 42 matches falling under the gimmick umbrella. The surprise is actually that he did not have more.
Whether you like long matches, title matches or gimmick matches, the main event should always be the big draw for every show. Samoa Joe is currently feuding with the Main Event Mafia, but leads the way in TNA with 19 total PPV main events. Kurt Angle, Christian Cage and Jeff Jarrett all trail him with 17 each. Interesting to note is that all 17 of Jarrett's main event spots came within the first 30 monthly PPVs.
