Tonight's Final Resolution promises to be a solid show—nothing more, nothing less. Both main events have a good mix of workers and storytellers, and just enough back story to create some interest in who wins and who loses. I wouldn't expect this to be a groundbreaking show at any level, but rather just a strong entry in an ongoing overarching plot. Specifically, young members of the The Front Line are reeling from being swept by the veterans of the Main Event Mafia last month (and, to a lesser extent, the month before that). TNA might actually have booked themselves into a bit of a corner here, as one would normally expect them to get some heat back this month, but the stipulations of both main events are set up so as to make that virtually impossible. I sincerely doubt we'll see any sea changers here tonight (unless TNA has secretly re-signed Christian), but we can hope for some good episodic television nonetheless.
[I just realized that I've been at this for more than a year, and so I'm restarting the YTD as of Turning Point. Rachael is calling shenanigans, on the assumption that I'm trying to rig the numbers. For those curious, the numbers for the year ending with BFG 2008 the results are:
Daniel = 62/98 = .633
Rachael = 43/75 = .573]
New YTD:
Daniel = 5/8 = .625
Rachael = 2/7 = .286
STING (c), KEVIN NASH, SCOTT STEINER, & BOOKER T vs. AJ STYLES, SAMOA JOE, & TEAM 3D World Heavyweight Championship Match
Where We've Been:
Two months ago, right when Samoa Joe was on the verge of defeating Sting to become the first man ever to retain the World Heavyweight Championship at Bound for Glory, Kevin Nash interfered to the benefit of his old friend and expense of his recent protégé. That same night, Kurt Angle lost to Jeff Jarrett, which for some reason not adequately explained seems to have driven Kurt clinically insane. Kurt responded by forming the Main Event Mafia, a group of main eventers who don't want to see the business taken over by disrespectful young punks. Last month at Turning Point, the MEM dominated with a 4-0 sweep (or 3-0 if you don't count Angle's victory over unaffiliated Abyss). Mick Foley booked the predictable main event war between the MEM and the (since renamed) Front Line, with AJ, Joe, and two partners of their choice challenging everyone but Kurt Angle (who is otherwise occupied). Foley did add the twist that if any of the Front Line win, AJ Styles will become World Heavyweight Champion (Joe is contractually forbidden from Sting challenging for the title). Meanwhile, Rhino joined the Front Line and, in a baffling concession to everything Kurt has said, decided that they need more veteran assistance. He recruited Team 3D, who were offended to have been left out of the MEM and happy to help an insurgency.
Where We're Going:
This would be an odd way to give AJ the world title, so I'd be inclined to think we'll be seeing more MEM dominance. Moreover, as long as Team 3D remain members of The Front Line, this war is completely pointless—nothing is as exciting as a battle between imported, veteran talent and…er…slightly different imported, veteran talent.
Daniel's Pick: MEM, probably off the Team 3D heel swerve.
RHINO vs. KURT ANGLE Career vs. Match with Jarrett at Genesis
Where We've Been:
After Booker T defeated Christian Cage last month, Cage had to join the MEM. However, they decided they'd rather have him beaten up than as a member, so they that's what they did. His bff (this week) Rhino was less than thrilled by this outcome, and was stupid enough to go to the ring alone to express his disappointment to the MEM. That didn't go so well for him. So he threw his hat in with the Front Line, and has since become they're leader pretty much by default. Meanwhile, Kurt Angle wants a shot at Jarrett for reasons not fully explained, and was willing to put his career on the line for the chance. Mick Foley has been appointed Special Guest Enforcer for the match to keep the MEM away, and since Kurt blames Mick for his loss to Jarrett at BFG, he has promised to bring non-MEM backup to keep an eye on Foley. There is some news of Rhino being hurt at a house show, so I don't know if we'll have a replacement for this match—it'd be as good a way to bring The Fallen Angel back as any, or Christian might have one more match to cover for his buddy.
Where We're Going:
So we're either never going to see Kurt Angle in TNA again, or else we'll have a match between Angle and Jarrett next month? Yeah, I have no idea where this one is going.
Both Picks: Kurt Angle. I really dislike career vs. x matches, since either the person whose career is on the line has to win or something really stupid has to happen (I should probably cite Foley vs. HHH at No Way Out 2000 as an exception).
SHEIK ABDUL BASHIR vs. ERIC YOUNG X Division Championship Match
Where We've Been:
Eric Young won a shot at the X Division title at last month's Turning Point. He then had a cup of coffee with the title on the following Impact, after referee Shane Seoul got ticked at Bashir and dropkicked him into a Death Valley Driver from EY. Jim Cornette had this crazy idea that having a referee actively beat the hell out of a competitor might hurt the institution's credibility, so the next week he reversed the decision and put Shane Seoul on probation. Bashir and EY have been at each other's throats since.
Where We're Going:
I think Bashir has some charisma on the mic, but the X Division seriously needs to move on. Hopefully Young can take the title and defend it next month against some hand-chosen agent of the MEM, while Bashir deals with Shane Seoul in a non-title feud.
Both Picks: Eric Young. It would be good for The Front Line to pick up a win somewhere.
AWESOME KONG (c) vs. CHRISTY HEMME Knockouts' Championship Match
Where We've Been:
Kong is looking for new competition, and Christy is looking for a chance. Someone in TNA actually remembered that Kong squashed Christy a few months back, and so Christy had supposedly been training with The Phenomenal AJ Styles till she got her shot.
Where We're Going:
Based on the Taylor Wilde model, I'm guessing the unlikely underdog gets close her first try, but comes up just a little bit short. An irate Kong will then foolishly walk into a loss next month. They could pull the trigger and give it to Christy this month, which would work out about the same.
My Pick: Awesome Kong.
Rachael's Pick: Christy Hemme, for trying to get women in wrestling taken seriously before it was the cool thing to do.
BEER MONEY INCORPORATED (c) vs. ABYSS & MATT MORGAN World Tag Team Championship Match
Where We've Been:
Abyss and Morgan have been in the title hunt since Beer Money went looking for competition a couple of months ago. I didn't quite follow how they got this particular shot, but such is life. This past week, Storm and Roode got Abyss drunk, then beat him up. I didn't really get the point of that either.
Where We're Going:
If there's a direction to the tag division, I sure don't see it. That being said, Morgan has been getting better every week, and is starting to justify some of the massive faith they've shown in him.
Both Picks: Abyss & Matt Morgan
ODB, ROXXI & TAYLOR WILDE vs. SHARMELL, VELVET SKY & ANGELINA LOVE
Where We've Been:
A couple of weeks ago Sharmell appeared on the surprisingly amusing ODB's Angle to talk about the Main Event Mafia, only to be insulted and challenged to a match. Booker hired the Beautiful People to look after her, with the promise that if they helped Sharmell win they could have his tricked out locker room (which, last I checked, was really Samoa Joe's locker room back in July). ODB, not liking the odds, enlisted Taylor Wilde & Roxxi, whom Traci Brooks officially added to this match.
Where We're Going:
Having either Booker T or The Beautiful People in the tricked out locker room could be funny, so this could play out either way. Theoretically, ODB is a member of The Front Line, so this could have broader plot implications; I very much doubt that it will though.
Both Picks: ODB, Taylor Wilde, & Roxxi.
Feast or Fired Match Where We've Been:
By its nature, this match has no back story. Four briefcases are suspended above the ring, one each with an X Division, Tag Team, and World Heavyweight Championship title oppurtunity, and one with a pink slip. Last year's match was pretty awful, but hopefully they've learned from their mistakes.
Where We're Going:
If they're going on the same model as last year, they'll win the briefcases tonight, open them in a couple of weeks, and claim the title shots sometime in 2017. Last year's match saw the dismissal of Christopher Daniels, and this year's match features his alter ego Curry Man, which could lead to some fun down the road. I still think it'd be cool if LAX won all three title shots, but that's just me.
