Thank you for joining me again as we put Raw "Under The Microscope." This is not a full recap of the show. Instead, this is a closer look at some of the events, trends, things you may have missed and things you may want to forget.
3 is a magic number
You can say what you want about the Randy Orton storyline coming out of the Royal Rumble (and many of you already have!), but I appreciate the symmetry in the opening segment. Three wrestlers, followed by three men in suits, discussing a condition broken down in to three simple letters. If you're collecting three letter abbreviation, please add IED to your RKO, HBK, JBL, and HLA. LOL, BRB, IMO.
Yes, Intermittent Explosive Disorder is an actual condition. According to a study conducted by the State of Rhode Island, the condition is more frequently found in men. In the same study, 88 percent of the people surveyed reported a feeling of relief after their rage-filled incident. No word on whether those same respondents reported a desire to hang out with two men with famous fathers who refuse to wear shirts.
Chamber of Horrors
The return of The Elimination Chamber brings the return of one of the most brutal matches in the WWE. This will be the eight time that they have used this type of match, including the Extreme version which also included weapons. So far, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, and Triple H lead the way by competing in this match four times.
When you look at the list of wrestlers who have been subjected to the Chamber, many of the usual names pop up, including Edge, Randy Orton, and Batista. Some surprising names on the list include Chris Masters, Big Daddy V, and Kevin Nash. Masters is surprising because it was rare to see him in a main event role. Big Daddy V was a part of the Elimination Chamber featuring ECW, so that makes sense upon further review.
Nash in a main event shouldn't be shocking. I had just forgotten his brief return from 2002-2004, which is largely forgettable because of injuries. He also lost a "hair match" with Chris Jericho. In reality, he needed to cut his hair for his role in the movie, "The Punisher." Which brings us nicely into our them of the week.
Let's all go to the lobby
In some weeks, themes are hard to find. This week, you didn't need a microscope, as much as you just needed to be awake.
-- John Cena promoted "12 Rounds"
-- Chris Jericho helped Mickey Rourke promote "The Wrestler"
-- Flashing back to the 2005 WrestleMania, we saw parodies of "A Few Good Men," "Braveheart," "When Harry Met Sally," "Gladiator," and "Taxi Driver."
Other celebrities featured in WrestleMania footage include Liberace, Billy Crystal, and Mr. T, who all have movies on their resumes. Cyndi Lauper has not only contributed to movie soundtracks, most notably "The Goonies," with a video that featured Captain Lou Albano, The Iron Sheik, Roddy Piper, and others. She's also appeared in movies, including "Vibes."
Clearly, the WWE likes spending time with the celebrities whenever possible. I'm just not sure who requested Liberace.
The one movie reference you may have missed occurred just before the C.M. Punk vs. Chris Jericho match. Punk had just entered the ring and before they cut to commercial, he yelled out "Hello, Cleveland!" Those same two words were part of a memorable scene in "This is Spinal Tap" when the musicians were walking through the back hallways trying to find the stage, with no success. The bassist attempted, in vain, to keep the band pumped up by yelling "Hello, Cleveland!"
Although it looks like the WWE is laying the groundwork for another celebrity wrestler with Jericho and Rourke exchanging words, I do appreciate some of Jericho's comments about the difference between portraying a wrestler and actually being a wrestler. We've seen it before with "Tiny" Lister as Zeus from "No Holds Barred." In "Ready to Rumble," David Arquette went from fan to WCW Champion. In both cases, the actors made it seem too easy to step into the ring and not only survive, but also compete.
Yes, The Microscope noticed the former WCW Champion Arquette in one of the video montages hyping WrestleMania.
May I explain?
Obviously, Shawn Michaels should have stayed by ringside at The Royal Rumble if he truly wanted to make sure that JBL won, but partial credit for a further explanation on Raw. He superkicked JBL to cause a distraction and then went to get a second referee. Perhaps not the best reasoning, but it's better than no follow-up at all. By the way, if we want to distract our dog we simply fake throwing a ball. I didn't know that we should have been superkicking him in the jaw all this time. You live, you learn.
We have been counting down unlikely people to appear on Raw and we've been able to cross off Sting, The Ultimate Warrior, and Jesse Ventura in recent weeks. I commented that Bruno Sammartino on Raw would be like finding a Honus Wagner rookie card. I was wrong. In one of the WrestleMania videos, we had our Sammartino sighting. I had forgotten that he participated in the first WrestleMania, alongside his son David.
It's the Executive V.P. of Global Media--RUN!
I'm not going to pile on the WWE for the ending of Raw. If you liked it, I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you didn't, join the club, we meet every Tuesday. Much has already been written about the WWE superstars who came out to the ramp, but didn't actually do much to help diffuse the situation. If you look closer at the last few minutes, try to follow the lawyers and therapist. The entire Raw roster came out to act as enforcers and the men in suits stood their ground. Shane McMahon walked through and they couldn't get out of the ring quickly enough. That's respect.
To Shane's credit, he is a former European Champion and he once held the Hardcore Title.
To bring our theme to a close, McMahon also had a small role in the 2002 film, "Rollerball."
