ECW HITS
Santino's Promo: After not getting any mic time on Raw, it was nice to see Santino Marella getting some on ECW. His brief promo before getting squashed by Mark Henry (on a side note, no Rey Mysterio in Money in the Bank, but Henry? I like Henry, and am curious to see him in a ladder match, but still.) was amusing as always. I enjoyed hearing him talk about his physique. It was particularly funny when talking about his abs as Beth Phoenix lovingly tapped him in the gut to show off those abs and he cringed in pain. Little touches like that have made the Glamarella pairing so fun. I also appreciate the "Baywatch" reference.
Fox vs. Natalya: Alicia Fox looked very impressive in her second match on WWE tv. Natalya showed why she should have had more ring time on Smackdown. This was a good short match. Fox's dropkick on Natalya was executed very well. In fact, it looked better than the vast majority of the dropkicks thrown by any woman wrestler in WWE, or TNA for that matter (I keep thinking about Taylor Wilde, a good athletic worker, who throws those ugly dropkicks where she always lands flat on her back). Fox has some skill. It was good to see Natalya back in the ring and doing the Sharpshooter. Throw Katie Lea Burchill into the mix and you have the start of a pretty solid (yet small) women's division.
Swagger, Miz & Morrison vs. Christian, Dreamer, Finlay: I have to start by saying I loved watching Jack Swagger before and after this match. His excited look in welcoming The Miz & John Morrison as his partners was great, as was his heat inducing smile after his team won. As for the match itself, it was a good six man tag. I was glad they got Hornswoggle's involvement out of the way early. After Christian got the hot tag from Tommy Dreamer, the match picked up nicely and built to a great ending. As Christian battled Morrison, all I could think was that I would love to see these two in a one on one match. I really enjoyed watching them wrestle. The ending with the blind tag from Swagger to sneak in and hit the gutwrench powerbomb for the win was very well executed. With some past tension between Christian and Finlay, and with Christian accidentally knocking Finlay to the outside, it seems WWE is planting seeds for a feud between them. A triple threat with Swagger for the ECW Title at WrestleMania seems likely.
ECW MISSES
Striker Over Praises "See No Evil": I understand having Kane on ECW to hype the debut of his movie "See No Evil" on SciFi this week. Having the announcers talk up the movie during his match makes sense to get fans wanting to tune in. However, don't ask your color commentator who has been doing a great job of gaining a ton of credibility in the role to look bad for such high praise of a movie that everyone knows isn't that good. He called it one of his favorite movies of all time. If he has that poor taste in movies and that little knowledge about what makes a movie good, then I call into question his taste and knowledge of wrestling. Ok, I am being facetious here. Nobody is going to stop liking Matt Striker because of this comment. But still, one of his favorite movies of all time? He must have only seen three movies.
Too Many Videos: There were six videos on ECW this week which is too many. Three of them made sense and were ok. ECW didn't need to show the others. The first was the opening recap from last week. That makes sense. The next video was on the returning Evan Bourne. Again, this was fine. They have been doing a series of these videos and hyping his return is great. This video was immediately followed by the Dirty Awards from wwe.com. I am also fine with this video as it featured ECW wrestlers Miz & Morrison. It wasn't great (other than Morrison's imitation of Bourne). Many of their Dirt Sheets have been funnier. But, it was decent. Unfortunately, the next three videos were all unnecessary. The first came immediately, when the unnamed Raw Rebound aired. I still say they don't need to show Raw footage on a one hour show with such low ratings. Why show people who watched Raw the night before footage from that show? For the record, that entire segment was made up of three videos. Later, they showed the same footage from John Cena's movie "12 Rounds" that aired on Raw. I'm sure it will air on Smackdown too. Then, came the Hall of Fame video on Cowboy Bill Watts. Again, it will also air on Smackdown. The problem is that there is too much to accomplish on a one hour show to air videos that we've already seen and will have a chance to see again on Friday.
