By Lee Stevens, PWTorch specialist

Thank you for joining me as put Smackdown "Under the Microscope." This is not a complete recap of the show. This is a closer look at what was said or what was seen and anything else in between.

Dead men tell no tales

Everyone assumed that Shawn Michaels would face The Undertaker based on Michaels's win over Vladimir Kozlov on Monday night. All along it seemed that everyone from JBL to Michaels to Kozlov and even Vickie Guerrero had an opinion on The Undertaker's opponent. One of the people we hadn't heard from was The Undertaker himself.

It was a nice, small detail when he formally accepted the challenge. I appreciated that The Dead Man built up his reputation and his 16-0 streak at WrestleMania and he was correct to say that many of his past opponents had tried to make a name for themselves by facing him. That could be true, I just don't think it rings true in this case as he is facing a veteran of more than 20 years.

Your name please

Shawn Michaels leads the way in many categories, including the first grand slam champion, which for Michaels included the WWF Title, Intercontinental Title, European championship, and the tag team belts. Friday night made me wonder if he led the way in another category with most nicknames. In previewing WrestleMania 25, he was referred by several different names in just a matter of seconds. Michaels answers to "The Heartbreak Kid," "The Main Event," "The Showstopper," "Mr. WrestleMania," "The Headliner," and "The Icon," giving the fans six solid choices.

If you take a closer look, you realize that he may not even lead his opponent at WM 25 in this category. The Undertaker is commonly referred to as "The Phenom," "The Dead Man," "The Demon of Death Valley," and "The Lord of Darkness." In the past he has used "The Big Evil" and "The American Bad Ass," tying HBK's number. Triple H also has an impressive number with three common aliases: "The Game," "The King of Kings," and "The Cerebral Assassin." The unofficial champion could be John Bradshaw Layfield as many people allegedly refer to JBL in a variety of forms, but most of them simply can't be reprinted.

Greatest of all time

In case you missed the references, WWE compared WrestleMania to some of the all-time greats including movies, sporting events, and athletes. Their movie choice was "Gone With The Wind," which received a then-record ten Academy Awards. In 1998, The American Film Institute ranked the top 100 American Films of All Time and "Gone With The Wind" ranked number four. Godfather and Casablanca topped GWTW and Citizen Kane was number one.

As for the athletic accomplishments, Joe Montana was chosen by the WWE as the epitome of football excellence. He was pictured leading his 49ers to victory against the Bengals in The Super Bowl. If you look quickly, it could have been either Super Bowl XVI or XXIII as the two teams faced off twice in the Super Bowl. After taking a closer look, it appears to be Super Bowl XXIII when Montana led a march down the field and connected with John Taylor with just 34 seconds left as San Francisco rallied to beat Cincinnati.

Tiger Woods was pictured celebrating winning one of his four Masters championships and cyclist Lance Armstrong could be seen holding up seven fingers commemorating his record seventh straight Tour De France win. They followed all of these great symbols of accomplishment by reminding us of the record-breaking attendance at WrestleMania 3 and what was billed as "The biggest main event in the history of sports entertainment:" Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant. As for Hogan, I count "The Hulkster," "The Immortal," and "Hollywood" among his more popular nicknames.

I wish I had money in my bank

Please add MVP and Shelton Benjamin to your list of entrants into the latest Money in the Bank match. For MVP, this is his second MITB event as he participated last year when C.M. Punk won. If anyone has any questions about this type of match, they should ask Benjamin as this will be the fourth time he's competed, although he's never won.

Jim Ross and Tazz emphasized how the winner of the Money in the Bank match could cash in the title shot any time and any place. Before his match, Jeff Hardy insisted that he would use the briefcase that night if he won. He didn't qualify, so we may not see someone with the same type of urgency. The first year, Edge waited until January to cash it in against John Cena. Rob Van Dam waited only until June to use his MITB victory to beat Cena.

Last year, Punk waited about the same amount of time with his payoff coming in June. The quickest turnaround belongs to Edge, who waited just four days to cash in his contract, however he wasn't the won to win the MITB match initially. Mr. Kennedy won it two years ago and then lost the opportunity to Edge on the May 7 edition of Raw. By May 11, Edge was the champ on Smackdown.

Feel the burn

As for Hardy, he continues to turn the other cheek with his brother as he refuses to fight Matt. He's also put aside his past bad experiences with pyro as he was introduced with plenty of explosions before his match with Benjamin. I'm surprised nothing was mentioned in between the blasts since the initial incident was so dramatic.

Marc made my brain hurt

If you're a loyal reader, you may remember that we discussed the origin of the term "Haymaker" last week. I saw it as an easy way to make a joke about MVP straight up ballin'. Torch reader Marc saw it as a chance to ask follow up questions. Before we start, let me be very clear in saying that I am not vouching for the absolute accuracy of all of these explanations, so please do not quote me in a term paper, newspaper report, or courtroom. If you have a better story behind any or all of these, please feel free to share.

Hi Lee:
Since you explained what a "haymaker" is, I was wondering if you can explain the origin of these names:
1) Irish Whip
2) Russian Legsweep
3) Pier 6 Brawl
4) Atomic Drop
5) Fisherman's Suplex

Thanks!

Keep up the great work!

I quickly realized the MVP joke simply wasn't worth it! After spending more time on research than I did throughout my years in college, I come up with the following explanations and/or theories.

1) Irish Whip--This term is often linked to a wrestler named Danno O' Mahony. O'Mahony held the AWA and NWA titles back in the mid 1930's and his signature move, the Irish Whip was a tribute to his Irish heritage

2) Russian Legsweep--In amateur wrestling, there is a move called a Russian tie up which starts with both wrestlers on their feet in a recognizable fashion to professional wrestling fans. Simply add a legsweep and it makes sense that the Russian Legsweep would get its name.

3) Pier 6 Brawl--The Pier 6 Brawl has been used to describe a chaotic scene by every great announcer from Jim Ross to Gorilla Monsoon, although it was probably first used in a wrestling match by Hall of Famer Gordon Solie. Former broadcaster Bob Murphy was also credited with using the phrase, although not necessarily coining the term. It's difficult to give any of these gentlemen singular credit when it also appears in the L.A. Times on February 25, 1933, referring to a prizefight as "It was a fine old pier Six brawl." Although the origin isn't exact, this is certain: if you're walking on Pier 3, 4, or 5, just turn around. Trust me. It's for the best.

4) Atomic Drop--Despite the name, it doesn't appear to have anything to do with atomic energy in any way. My best guess is that the first word was for emphasis and the second word was quite literal. You are dropping your opponent, but "a drop" isn't very imposing. If you are looking for a superlative description, you could certainly do worse than calling something "atomic."

5) Fisherman's Suplex--Although I couldn't find a definitive answer, I would speculate that the key is in the grabbing of the leg before sending the opponent skyward. The difference between a basic suplex and the fisherman's suplex lies in "the hook." If you hook the leg, you can catch a victory, or in some cases, hook a "perfect" victory.

Again, I'm not positive that the descriptions are correct. If you have a better explanation, I would love to hear it.
