HOOPS BLOG: Raw thoughts on Flair beating and Orton performance, TNA house show, This Week in History

PWTorch VIP members have first-look access to all of Torch specialist Greg Hoops's latest blogs in the newly upgraded VIP Forum. His blogs are published first in the PWTorch VIP Forum, and Hoops interacts with other VIP members and Torch staff and contributors in the blog comments area afterward. Some of Hoops's blog entries will be exclusive to the VIP Forum.

In my Torch Roundtable review of Raw, I noted that it was not my favorite show. I did note there were a couple of major positives of the show, namely the mic work of Jericho and Ric Flair and the performance of Randy Orton.

The opening segment with Jericho and Flair on the mic was really, really well done. It looked to me that Flair was opened hardway by Jericho's punch. For me, they should have ended the segment there. Or had Jericho take Flair's watch - the one we assume was given to him by Shawn Michaels at last year's WrestleMania - and destroy it, then Jericho should have walked away.

The long beat down of Flair did nothing for my interest in the angle, other than remind me Flair is 60-years-old. If Lawler was so appalled by Jericho's actions and was going to challenge Jericho, why didn't he step in and stop Jericho last night instead of just stand there? Jericho is great, but this angle is hard to get excited about.

The wrestling on the show was almost non-existent. I enjoy interviews and angles, but this show was too light on the in-ring action for my taste.

One of the things I look forward to most every WrestleMania since it has become a part of the WrestleMania weekend is the HOF ceremony. This year's class is a great class, except for Koko B. Ware, but the promotion behind the HOF ceremony has been anything but first rate.

The Undertaker-Shawn Michaels segment was decent and this is the match I am actually looking forward to the most.

Randy Orton was awesome in his role in the closing segment. I don't like how this match has been built around the McMahon family and Triple H trying to avenge the family instead of building the match around the WWE Title. With that being said, Randy Orton is the standout performer of WWE. This closing segment reminded me of the 1991 angle involving Jake Roberts and Randy Savage where Robert's cobra bit Savage and Miss Elizabeth became involved. That angle was the best angle of 1991 and this segment/angle could prove to be the best of 2009.

TNA is running a house show in my area this week and to their credit, they have been advertising the show during Raw the last several weeks. I am planning on going and will post a report when I get back from the show.

This Week in History: WWF held WrestleMania X this week in 1994. The show is probably best remembered by the Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon ladder match. While I loved that match, the best match on the card was actually the Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart opening match. WrestleMania VII was also held this week in 1991 with Hogan vs. Sgt. Slaughter as the main event.

VIP Member alert: I will have the Torch Nostalgia podcast available later this week and will also have a special WrestleMania podcast with J.R. Barnes as we review WrestleMania 1 and 5 on the Torch site by Thursday.
