ABSURD Thoughts: Don't Sleep on ECW, "The Streak" Should Never Be Broken, Those WWF Shotgun Saturday Nights

"If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Because I'm the taxman
"

"Taxman" by The Beatles

When I received my GameInformer magazine in the mail today, I saw that under the "Reader's top five favorite games" section was none other than a picture of TNA Legends Champion A.J. Styles. (In case you are wondering, Super Mario Bros. 2 was at top of the list.) In my head I keep expecting every wrestler to be only interested in visiting strip clubs and getting hammered. Next you'll hear that Angle likes to play "Professor Layton And The Curious Village."

Don't sleep on ECW. After a long and bloated Raw, it's refreshing to get back to basics. Was it the greatest John Morrison match ever? I still hold C.M. Punk winning the ECW championship from JoMo as truly special, but this great match hit you out of nowhere.

That's why I have an affinity for ECW, because in a way it has shown that it can separate itself from the usual WWE content shown. The chemistry that was Todd Grisham and Matt Striker (sadly now gone) made listening to the announcers fun instead of a chore. C.M. Punk and Matt Hardy cut their teeth down in ECW land. Now, we can see Jack Swagger and Evan Bourne's development.

Speaking about Jack Swagger, it has been talked about how Swaggah could be the one to beat Undertaker at WrestleMania. In my opinion, "The Streak" should never, ever be broken. Why? It's because "The Streak" is not only a fixture of WrestleMania lore (much like how MITB matches are becoming), but it's also part of the lore for the character of Undertaker.

The proof is in the pudding with Jack Swagger, who makes me feel confident about the young talent WWE is bringing up. But let's say that Swaggah does beat Undertaker at WM 27. That means Swaggah is the one who could do what all of the other guys couldn't do. That means Swaggah is the main man. True, Undertaker has beaten some dumb-dumbs at WrestleMania like a Giant Gonzelez or King Kong Bundy. But if Swaggah did beat Undertaker, in a sense Swaggah would be put over the likes of HBK, Triple H, Ric Flair, Edge, Randy Orton...

So in my opinion "The Streak" should never be ended. Newcomers might think that Randy Orton is the youngest WWE champion, but it's actually Brock Lesnar. "The Next Big Thing" might become "The Next Big Bust," and I believe it's important to not give too much too soon, lest it go to their heads and WWE ends up with egg on their faces.

If there is one flaw in Matt Striker's announcing, it's the fact that he goes overboard with over-analyzing. Striker feels that every wrestler is an intelligent, crafty individual who is "targeting the neck area." That's his catchphrase, by the way. There was one point where Bourne and Morrison tumbled outside and Bourne landed on top of Morrison. Strike applauds Bourne for making the pin. Uh, bro, he just fell on top of him.

Mr. Nosebleed chimes in randomly with a statement (basically "ECW is great!") Mr. Nosebleed reminds me of Tony Schiavone. I don't know why.

And hey, Kozlov doing his Kozlov squashes. Yeehaw. I like Kozlov's offense. But his broken-English monster promos? Wha? It's too much to ask that Kozlov change his character and start dressing like an actual badass or act even remotely human.

WGN Superstars? Give it a whirl. I don't expect more than two dark matches filled in with more WWE video packages. Of course, WWE could buck the trend and go back to those controversial "Saturday Night Shotgun" shows. Used to get me all Jakked up (credit to upload.wikimedia.org). (Asst. editor's note: It was like a Live Wire on the WWE All-American Action Zone. ... Sorry.)

I'm actually looking forward to TNA Impact tomorrow. Another out-there Foley promo ("Sting-o I'll make him bleed-o like Rocky did with Apollo Creed-o) with a weird-ass main event. Impact is having more stuff that connects to the bigger picture. It seemed like before it was just a lot of random stuff to limp towards the PPV.
