SMACKDOWN HITS
JeriShow vs. Cryme Tyme: This was another good match between these two teams. I enjoyed their feud leading up to their Tag Title match at SummerSlam and it was nice to see them in the ring again on Smackdown this week. Everyone played to their strengths in the match with Chris Jericho and JTG handling most of the in ring work, while Shad Gaspard and The Big Show were allowed to show off their size and strength. The match had good wrestling action and went a good length at 12 minutes. The ending was very strong as JTG skinned the cat back into the ring, kicking Jericho down in the process, only to take a knock out shot from Big Show.
Morrison - Ziggler: WWE made the right decision in postponing the Intercontinental Championship match between John Morrison and Dolph Ziggler until some time after Breaking Point. The match up was sort of forced on them after Rey Mysterio was suspended and rushing into the match would have been a mistake. It was nice to see them starting to build a feud between the two this week on the back of Morrison beating Mysterio for the IC Title last week. They had a strong verbal exchange. Morrison sounded more confident on the mic than he's been since becoming a babyface. They both performed well. It wasn't all great. I liked the idea of playing around with Ziggler's name considering how much emphasis he put on it when he debuted. It was a nice rewind to when he used to constantly introduce himself to everyone. However, it wasn't that funny. The Mr. Ziggles thing didn't do it for me. But, it was still a good first step in what should be a fun feud to watch develop over the next few weeks.
Hardy vs. Punk: I enjoyed the submission match between Matt Hardy and CM Punk more than their match last week, which I also liked. It was good to see WWE do a submission match to help hype Breaking Point. Hardy used moves that I don't recall ever seeing him do before. Shaking up your in ring routine and adding moves to your repertoire is something most wrestlers could really benefit from more often. I would love to see more emphasis in WWE on submission holds. I complain about rest holds because rest holds (how I define the term) are lazy moves to give the wrestlers a chance to rest in the middle of a match that don't actually look like they hurt the opponent. Do something that looks like it will hurt. Do something visually interesting. Don't just grab a guy's arm or put him in a lazy chin lock. With Breaking Point, several wrestlers will be given the chance like Hardy to do some new moves and I hope they respond well.
SMACKDOWN MISSES
Punk - Undertaker: I'm just not really into this feud. It was a nice surprise to have Undertaker return unannounced at SummerSlam, but what did CM Punk do to deserve being attacked after his TLC match? I understand things from Punk's stand point, but not Undertaker's. There isn't enough of a back story and hasn't been enough of a build up for a submission match between the two. Sure, the match should be good and has a chance to be great. However, this submission format is forcing the feud in one direction instead of letting it go there more organically. It was good to see Punk use the Anaconda Vice on Matt Hardy to remind the fans of the move, but he really should have been using it more in recent weeks to make it a legit submission finisher that might actually work on Undertaker. The writing has been poor for this feud so far.
Finlay Defeats Knox: Isn't Finlay like 50 years old? Shouldn't he be used to enhance other newer talent at this point in his career? Without a PPV match, this should have been the blow off to this feud. If it was, it was a shame to se Finlay take a beating, hit Mike Knox with one "move" and get the win. Knox should have gotten the victory to cement his status and move up the ladder while Finlay could move on to something else. That still might happen down the line if the feud continues, but for now the WWE gave the wrong guy the win.
