-- 9/17 TNA IMPACT HITS & MISSES
We're at the lead-in show to No Surrender this Sunday, so it's time to get a card finalized and push the matches that people are going to want to pay to see. Was that accomplished? Here's my review of the shows highs and lows.
IMPACT HITS
Rhino's Promo: While I'm still not a fan of the Jesse Neal backstory to this angle, I did see a side of Rhino that has been a long time coming. He plays the ticked-off, angry, mad-at-the-world character just as well as he did in his ECW days. And although I'm not a fan of TNA bringing up other wrestling organizations that they seem to do all too often, it was necessary here to explain the history between Rhino and the Dudleys. I still don't see how this promo made me want to buy the upcoming Rhino vs. Bobby Lashley match this Sunday, but at least it built a foundation for a Rhino-Dudley feud down the road.
Kurt Angle and Matt Morgan Closing Brawl: I'll say it again -- ever since TNA had the excellent all-out brawl about a month ago, they've been relying too much on brawls to build tension. But this one was needed because it made the main event this Sunday a little more interesting to watch. We now know for a fact that Kurt Angle is willing to take out anyone, including his former comrade Matt Morgan, to retain his title on Sunday. I would have liked to have seen Sting and A.J. Styles get a little more time to hype their part in the match besides their one small backstage interview, but at least there's now more intrigue that makes me want to see the outcome of the TNA World Title match on Sunday. Will Morgan get his revenge for being slammed through a table? Will Angle overcome all odds and retain? Will Sting or Styles come out of nowhere to pull the upset? These are the seeds successfully planted for the PPV.
IMPACT MISSES
Too Many Short Matches: I am really getting sick and tired of complaining about this week in and week out. I know this was the final show before the PPV, and it's TNA's job to hype as many of the matches as possible, but not one single match lasted longer than five minutes this week. To me as a wrestling fan, that is just unacceptable. I enjoy the building of the storylines, I enjoy the interviews, but the bottom line is that I want to see WRESTLING on a WRESTLING SHOW. Enough of this bull of having matches under five minutes. It makes the wrestlers who lose look pitifully weak and doesn't give the fans any action to enjoy in the ring. I know I'm not alone on this opinion.
Suicide vs. "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero: This was a great X-Division sub-card matchup that was building up nicely, and if anything I expected it to be on a PPV card either this Sunday or at the next PPV. But instead, we get these two men in a three-minute throwaway match on free TV that had Dinero get a pretty convincing win over the former X-Division champion (a fact not even mentioned during the match). Weeks and weeks of buildup was flushed down the toilet in about three minutes. Thanks again TNA.
Goodbye Angelina, Hello Madison: Ever since the announcement was made a few weeks back that Angelina Love was being let go by TNA due to apparent issues with her Visa, I've been extremely disappointed. Angelina Love is probably one of the most over characters in TNA right now, and she actually wrestles well in the ring too. Plus, as a guy, you just HAVE to love that ring entrance. Meow. You knew that somehow Madison Rayne was going to come back to the Beautiful People once Angelina's departure was announced, but its still sad to see Love go without even so much as a fight from TNA brass. I sincerely hope that TNA gets their respective heads out of the holes that they are in and gets Angelina Love back in TNA soon.
Homicide With World Elite: Still a sore subject with me. As I called it last week, with Homicide in World Elite, Eric Young did most of the talking while Homicide stood in the shadows. And Homicide's explanation for his turn was lame at best. The old "I made you, now I'm gonna break you" angle has been played out time and again in wrestling. Give us something different. I'm also concerned that Hernandez is going to get lost in the mid-card shuffle with this feud with World Elite when he is deserving of the top-tier push that others (Matt Morgan) are getting.
Cody Deaner Even Being Thought Of As Knockouts Champion: Enough said here.
