WWE NXT Rankings & Evaluation
By George Chiverton, PWTorch specialist

February 1, 2012 - Week 48

Rookie: Derrick Bateman
This Week's Performance: 4
Gimmick: 7
Last Week's Rank: #1
Rank: #1

Comments: William Regal buried Bateman in one single sarcastic comment: "I think we're all winners from this segment." It did sum up Bateman's night, as he wasn't great. I think what Bateman says is usually perfectly entertaining, but, this week, as much as any, he had a tendency to rush through what he wanted to say. However, it doesn't tarnish Bateman too badly for me, as he worked hard to get a response and the single dropkick he performed during his match was absolutely textbook. My inner Hugh Morris was most impressed.

Rookie: Titus O'Neil
This Week's Performance: 6
Gimmick: 4
Last Week's Rank: #2
Rank: #2

Comments: Titus was so odd this week. He must have screwed up in his opening promo, as no one could have possibly written, "I don't need you, Darren Young," with Titus quite clearing rejecting Darren, before turning around to shake his hand. It just didn't make sense. Other than that, I thought he did a pretty good job at connecting with the fans (even if his heat was a little cheap) and he was plenty good-enough in the ring. His finisher in particular was as good as I've ever seen it, although that could just be because A-Ry sells like a champ.

Rookie: Darren Young
This Week's Performance: 5
Gimmick: 1
Last Week's Rank: #3
Rank: #3

Comments: How cheap can heat get? I think Darren Young actually managed to be the lowest bidder. But, I like the way he snuggled up to Titus. It fits his character well and perhaps he can find success as a tag team competitor with Titus? Probably not, though. In the ring, he was okay, although, little more than that. In general, I just have very little to say about Darren other than yes, he appeared this week. Perhaps a gimmick injection is necessary.

Other Comments: Maxine should probably marry me? Just saying. Regal was superb again, as he always is, and the prospect of Tyson and Barreta as a team has me thoroughly excited, especially when placed in the context of the current tag team division. They could have some excellent high-flying PPV openers with Primo & Epico in the not-so-distant future.
