In Brief: Batista’s cards as Drax the Destroyer command big bucks.

Card Show #47: Batista 2014 Upper Deck Guardians of the Galaxy

“Bootista” may have flopped on so many levels in 2014, but this was the year that Dave Bautista became a legitimate movie star.

All summer long moviegoers were eagerly awaiting Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which turned out to be the biggest movie of the year. When Upper Deck released the first images of its accompanying trading cards – which included memorabilia and autographs from most of the film’s top stars – card collectors, comic book enthusiasts, and wrestling fans were even more excited.

Upper Deck released hobby and retail versions of the 2014 Guardians cards. Retail packs hit stores like Target and Walmart first, filled with basic cards and a few inserts and parallels. But collectors had to wait a few weeks for the hobby version of the product in order to start chasing autographs and memorabilia cards.

Batista – as Drax the Destroyer – appears on several different cards in Upper Deck’s 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy set. There are a handful of memorabilia cards that feature swatches of clothing worn by Batista in the movie. A dual memorabilia card with two different types of material usually sells in the $10-20 range, and a memorabilia card with an oversized swatch of material usually sells for about the same.

Upper Deck’s 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy also includes Batista’s first certified autographed trading card. Even though he appeared on WWE cards from Fleer and Topps, Batista never signed for those sets. A basic Batista Guardians autograph usually sells in the $75-100 range, while an autographed memorabilia card sells for quite a bit more, usually in the $150-200 range.

Batista’s signature also appears on a couple different dual autograph cards, the most common of which pairs him with Lee Pace (Ronan, the film’s top villain). This card usually sells in the $150-200 range. Another dual autograph pairs Batista with Michael Rooker (Yondu, and also Merle Dixon from “The Walking Dead”). It also sells in the $150-200 range.

One thing to note: if you’re looking for Batista’s Guardians of the Galaxy cards on eBay, Amazon, and other sites, be sure to use the “Bautista” spelling of his name.
