WWE ECW Reax #1: "I hope this is a sneak peak at where they are going with the ECW brand." Nov 8, 2007 - 11:48:34 AM
Scott Dixon of Syracuse, N.Y. (7.0) Best Match: Noble vs. Nunzio Worst Match: Kane vs. Henry. I hope this is a sneak peak at where they are going with the ECW brand. Most people probably were not as stoked as I was on the show, but other than the short time given for the main event, I thought this was at least a step in the right direction as far as showing the potential of possibly making ECW a home for the best in-ring action of the three brands. Having guys like Jamie Noble, Shannon Moore, and Jimmy Yang Wang (last week) come into the mix with your younger already established stars like Punk, Morrison, Miz, and even Striker, sets the show up for some key match ups that could really, really entertain. After reading the Smackdown taping results, I am very excited to see a program being built towards a Noble vs. Punk. I think ECW could relive some of its former glory if just given the chance to cherry pick a few lower roster guys from Raw and Smackdown and build a credible, high workrate roster. Move Super Crazy, Val Venis, and Charlie Haas from Raw and Funaki, Yang, Moore, and Noble from Smakdown and you have a roster full of high-energy, hard-hitting solid in-ring workers who if given a new shot could really represent the old ECW well and still work within Vince's "vision" of what the project should be. Just some wishful thinking I guess...
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (8.0): Best: Punk vs. Morrison (videos and match). Worst: Layla vs. Kelly. They must have been doing some kind of supershow or something again since there wasn't much in th way of wrestling tonight on the only hour-long wrestling show still in existence. Noble-Nunzio was a good little match while it lasted. Rey gets a nice plug by ECW for his match with Finlay and his DVD showing a piece of his debut. Punk vs. Morrison was the focus for much of it, as it should be, and it was done very well. Considering that the actual match started right at 11 (how abbreviated will Smackdown be as a result?), I knew the match was going to be fairly short. And I saw Miz figuring into the finish coming from a ways but I didn't mind as it takes the three of them into three-way territory. This does, however, put the Miz-Layla-Balls-Kelly thing on the back burner, and a lot of potential got lost here. Brooke is gone; for TV purposes did Miz fire her for doing something similar to Kelly? Would have helped a lot there. And when Layla first started as a diva, she did show some promise in the ring; it was nowhere to be found here. A good storyline's been blown here and I don't know if there are any intentions to recover it, but it would be a shame if it's lost. On a regularly unrelated note, but since it was introduced on ECW: the now dual-stipulation Michaels-Orton match is too early and all wrong. Unlike Edge's streak of DQs in 2006 in his feud with John Cena, Michaels-Orton has had one go-round only. I could buy the Sweet Chin Music ban only if Orton's finisher - or more importantly, the Legend Killer Punt - were taken away as well as opposed to any sort of DQ. And the fine print of "or attempts to..." leaves too much gray area. I hope they know what they're doing with this.
