TNA Turning Point PPV Reax #1: "Many times, I have stood up for TNA. Today, I've got nothing." Dec 3, 2007 - 12:32:26 PM
Joe Haas of Columbia, Md. (3.5): Best match: Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong. Worst match: Match of 10,000 tacks. Many times, I have stood up for TNA. I even once called it the best promotion in North America (yes, that was a stretch). Today, I've got nothing. I think the Women's Title match from last night was a great model for how you book a monster heel and make people keep wanting to see the face champion face that heel. Too bad the booking on all the men's matches was lacking. Why is Christian taking a pin in a four-way match also involving Kaz, Robert Roode, and Booker T, who says he wants to help put other wrestlers over? Wouldn't Kaz pinning Roode have made the most sense here? Also, when is the Roode/Ms. Brooks split going to happen? After the last of us stop caring? Hall's no-show is disturbing. Like Kevin Nash, I hope he's okay, but like Samoa Joe, I'm done with Scott Hall as a wrestler. Just stay away. The main event was nothing great, and why was Tomko doing all that selling when he supposedly is badly hurt. Oh well, he did owe Joe a pinfall, so there's that. Then, there was the classlessness of the women's tag match - I feel badly for Roxxi who by most accounts is quite a good wrestler. MMG and Lethal were allowed to look good despite not getting the win; that's a hopeful sign. And at least we don't have to pay again to find out what's in each of the four briefcases, but that was a bait-and-switch, all the same. As for the thumbtacks match - who cares? TNA took a big step backward last night.
Matt Guerra of Bayonne, N.J.: (8.0) Best match of the night was the main event. Worst match of the night was the 10K tacks match. Overall TNA put out a good PPV. Whether or not this Hall no-show is a Vince Russo work or legit, TNA did the all-important job of making Joe relevant again. His promos were emotional, he seemed like he belonged with the Angle's of the world. The crowd was hot tonight which really helped the PPV. I liked how the feast or fired match worked out. The tables match was also done well. Hats off to the ladies; once again, they proved they belong in TNA.
Michael Moore of Casper, Wy. (6.0): Best segment: Samoa Joe promo. Worst: Eric Young vs. James Storm. After what was a really strong PPV last month, this was a major letdown. Then again, it looked that way on paper, and TNA did nothing to exceed those expectations. Nothing on the show was bad, but it was all just there, and this will probably be the most forgettable TNA PPV yet. The only thing of any importance that happened was Joe's promo. He cut a great, passionate promo, and this would be the perfect opportunity for him to go on a crusade to take out those "superstars" he spoke of, starting with the Voodoo Kin Mafia and Team 3D. It'd be good to see him work his way through all of those guys before ultimately taking the belt from Kurt Angle. Unfortunately, I don't have enough faith in the TNA creative folks to believe they've thought that far ahead, and Joe's promo will probably be forgotten by tonight's tapings. Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong was the surprise of the night. I've never seen that much heat on a women's match in the 22 years I've been watching wrestling. Both played their parts perfectly, and the crowd responded. Kaz/Booker vs. Roode/Christian was okay, but all four deserve better than a throwaway tag match. The match of 10,000 tacks was a gore fest, which is okay from time to time, but these things seem to happen at least once a month in TNA, and that's too much. Young vs. Storm was just flat. Storm can be a good heel, but Young is way overrated by both the Internet crowd and TNA management. He's got a good goofy charisma, but he's very boring in the ring. The finish to the Team 3D match was absolutely horrible, but considering the whole storyline with them being allowed to steal the X Division belt and keep it, that's not surprising. Hopefully this episode with Scott Hall will teach TNA something about insisting on using the pushing-50 crowd, but I doubt it. Nash, Hall, Randy Savage, and others have all left them scrambling at PPVs for various reasons. Overall, nothing was bad, nothing was great. These matches would have made for a decent couple episodes of Impact, but I expect more for 30 bucks.
