ROH Man Up PPV Reax #1: "Wow. This was the best PPV I've ever seen, next to WrestleMania 17." Dec 3, 2007 - 12:43:55 PM
Andrew (10.0): Wow. This was the best PPV I've ever seen, next to WrestleMania 17. ROH continues to top themelves and raise the bar higher and higher after every pay-per-view they produce. I thought ROH would have a tough time topping Respect Is Earned, but Driven blew it out of the water. Then I thought Driven was gonna be the measuring stick, but Man Up was far and away superior. Now I'm thinking to myself, "How can anything top that?" But I'd now be far from surprised if Undeniable wasn't better than all three of the previous PPV shows. For starters, the opening four-way match between Nigel, Marufuji, Claudio, and Hero was an amazing opener. Not only was it a great way to start the show, but it meant something. And that something you hardly ever see from Vince - Russo or McMahon. The NRC vs. Resilliance match series was pretty creative and well booked. I thought that the feud as a whole was pretty flat, but these three matches definatley elevated my opinion, as once again... They were good matches, but even more importantly, THEY MADE SENSE! Another match with great execution from both the wrestlers as well as Gabe was the World Title match. Danielson vs. Morishima was everything a pro wrestling match should be. As for the main event, I have nothing to say other than "Match Of The Year". (Although I did say that about Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin at Good Times, Great Memories. And then once I saw it, I was forced to change my top match to Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico from the Death Before Dishonor Night 1 show. Clearly, the honors now go to the ladder match. This just adds more to the reason why I considor the Briscoes the greatest tag team ever. They're a true representation of the ROH product. They keep topping themselves, almost all the time.)
Em Smith, Redding, California (9.0) Best Match: Briscoes vs. Steen/El Generico. Worst Match: Time constraint. Fair warning, I'm going to be coming across as a fanboy here once again. Having heavily enjoyed "Driven," I didn't hesitate at all to order this PPV the first day it became available, and once again, ROH did not disappoint. I'm a wrestling fan who is more into the in-ring action and simple storylines that make sense, and this promotion more than any other U.S. one caters to these preferences. I was feeling that old, almost forgotten feeling of marking out during these matches, especially between Erick Stevens and Roderick Strong, and Danielson and Morishima, even though I already knew who won. Morishima still comes off as a dangerous champion, but by the end of the match you know he is beatable and that it was only a matter of time, and he knows it, too, because of what he resorted to. To me, this is great stuff that I'd take over a leprechaun running through an imaginary wall any day of the week. And the ladder match... let's just say I don't think I can watch another ladder match again. Every time I thought it had to end, they just upped the ante and it was plain war between the two teams. My only complaint is against the time. While I have seen the full Age of the Fall arrival online, I would have liked to see it on the PPV as well. But this is a minor complaint against a stellar show.
Glenn Crocker of Knoxville Tenn. (9.5): Best: Ladders war. Worst: Nothing. That ladder war was just plain awesome! The Briscoes had me poppin' like a ten year old Hulk Hogan "mark" in the '80s. Now, I'm one of those guys who know the answers to just about every wrestling trivia question from 1982 to the present. I also have been reading the Torch for almost ten years. I am telling you to spent the paltry 15 dollars to see something absolutely original in wrestling. My words can't even do this PPV justice. Just see it.
Jason Hadden of Owensboro, Ky. (10.0): Best match: Ladder War. Worst match: None. I ordered ROH's last PPV, Driven, and was blown away by the Briscoes vs Steen & El Generico match and the contender's match between Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuiness. I didn't think ROH could top that show, but they did with Man Up. There wasn't a bad match on this show. I must admit, I haven't seen much of ROH. I only own two ROH DVDs that received rave reviews here at the Torch, so I don't know much about the promotion or the wrestlers, but with shows like this, ROH is quickly becoming my favorite promotion. Bryan Danielson's gimmick of being "best in the world" is quickly turning into reality. Danielson and Morishima merged MMA with pro wrestling better than I've ever seen it done before in their ROH Title match. The action was non-stop, intense, and believable. The out-of-the-blue finish to their match made sense from a storyline perspective, and it left me wanting more. The Briscoes have made me a fan of tag team wrestling again. The ladder war was violence cranked to 11, but instead of being a stunt fest (like in the glory days of ECW), the two teams told a great story and built to an epic finish. The only problem I had with the show was that the ladder war went too far, and it might cause new fans to expect that level of violence on each ROH PPV and we don't need wrestlers trying to top that match... ever. I don't know if ROH puts on matches like this often, but for the sake of the roster, I hope they don't. I'm already looking forward to the next PPV. Everyone on this show busted their ass in the ring, the booking made sense and pro wrestling was the focus. I can't even recall the last time a WWE or TNA PPV could make that same claim.
