WWE Armageddon PPV Reax #1: "I just about jumped out of my seat when Hardy beat Triple H clean." Dec 17, 2007 - 1:53:04 AM
Michael Bane of Chicago, Ill. (6.5): Best Match: Jeff Hardy vs. Triple H. Worst Match: Big Daddy V/Mark Henry vs. CM Punk/Kane. Solid, but not a spectacular PPV. Rey and MVP put on a pretty good match, although the "I quit because this is too hard" disqualification is about my least favorite way to end a match. C.M. Punk and the three lugs was actually better than what I was expecting, although it didn't really do anything for me. Michaels was good as always, and Kennedy sold the hand injury very well. I actually found myself grimacing when HBK slammed his fingers into the mat. Good story and buildup to the end, where working on a body part had consequence. I just about jumped out of my seat when Hardy beat Triple H clean in a very good match. He's not ready to hold a title yet, but a title shot will do nicely to gradually build him up as a main event player. I actually find myself liking Triple H for the first time in a while for taking the loss. Finley-Khali was fine for what it was, but I'd rather have not seen it. I don't like interference disqualifications, but it was really the only way to book the Orton-Jericho match that made a lot of sense. Too soon to put the belt on Y2J, and a loss would have been devastating to any main event credibility he might have. Plus, we get JBL back! The Diva's division is currently Beth Phoenix > everyone else. Have fun finding someone we believe can legitimately beat her. Finally, I was glad to see Edge take the title through his usual heelish and cowardly antics, because having someone chase him always seems to work well. I didn't really care a ton for the match though. Too short, and the three Edge's were a little too gimmicky for a headline match.
Hank Schaller, Torch VIP member of Muskegon, Mich (8.0): Despite a lackluster main event, at least somewhat, WWE and Vince McMahon seem to have their act together. Seeing Triple H give himself up for the good of the promotion was definitely a great thing to see. Following the anniversary show and the upcoming show from Iraq, WWE seems to be on a hot streak. Hopefully, McMahon will not get mad and let the Nature Boy leave as a hero, even if he loses in the ring. After all, slick Rick deserves the proper send-off. I still can't believe that McMahon and Bruno Sammartino, who originally made the WWF popular, don't talk. That's silly.
Jamie Wolfe of Mishawaka, Ind. (4.0): Best Match: Hardy vs. Triple H. Worst Match: Finlay vs. Khali. The only reason my rating is this high is because the Michaels-Kennedy and Hunter-Hardy matches were good. Everything else was formulaic for the WWE right now. The overall event wasn't too bad, but the lack of clean finishes on PPV's is starting to become a trend. Half the matches on the card ended in non-clean finishes, including both title matches. In the last 6 PPV's, the Smackdown and Raw Title matches have had three DQ/non-clean finishes apiece. In total out of 46 matches, 15 of them have ended in DQ, count out, no contest, or a victory due to some form of outside interference or cheating. That's 1 out of every 3 matches and 50 percent of the Raw or Smackdown title matches not ending cleanly. Total rundown by PPV: Summerslam: 2/8, Unforgiven: 1/8, No Mercy: 2/8, Cyber Sunday 3/7, Survivor Series: 2/7, Armageddon: 4/8. I don't know if I'm the only one that this annoys, but it's the main reason, besides lack of quality, well-wrestled matches, that I don't purchase WWE PPVs anymore.
