TORCH QUESTION OF THE WEEK Reax #1: Reaction to whether Jeff Hardy would make a good WWE champion Dec 18, 2007 - 9:10:07 AM
For this week's question of the week, we asked Torch readers for their thoughts on whether Jeff Hardy would make a good WWE champion, defined by how he would fare as a main event draw for the company. Does he have the ability to turn superstar pops in arenas into PPV buys, ticket sales, and more merchandise revenue? You can still contribute! Click on the Contact Us link above and send James Caldwell an email with your thoughts on Hardy as champion. We'll post more feedback looking at concerns for Hardy as champion, but first, a positive batch of feedback ...
Mark A., Torch reader of Russellville, Ark.: My response to the question of the week is... Yes! I think Jeff Hardy would be a fine champion. I don't see WWE putting the belt on him, but I think he could draw fine. His merchandise already sells well. I don't think he could be a "long-term" champ, but for a month or two, why not. He is the same height and weight as Shawn Michaels, so his size can't be questioned. The WWE put the title on Mysterio briefly a few years ago, so anything is possible. I already feel like Jeff gets top three in "loudest" pops every week. The fans love and adore him, and I am glad he has finally been elevated to title contention.
Henry Schaller, Torch VIP member of Muskegon, Mich.: I think Hardy would be a good champion. After all, size did not matter when other champs were in place, like Rey Mysterio. Who knows? Maybe even Hornswoggle would be a valid champion with the push he is receiving. Just kidding. But with the aerobatic maneuvers that Hardy does, I think fans would accept his championship status. Hopefully, he can hold the title for a while because not every champ has to be a physical behemoth. I can't stand the thought of the Great Khali being a champion for example. At this point, with the push that Jamie Noble is receiving, maybe he would be a valid champion, but not as much as Hardy. He deserves more than a cruiserweight title or tag title.
Sam Robison, Torch reader: I think Hardy would make a convincing champ, so long as the program was kept short and booked right. He gets some of the larger pops, has a ton of fan reaction, and isn’t half bad on the mic when given the right direction to go with things. The way I could see this program booked would be Hardy winning at the Rumble by a clean non-roll up fluke after getting Orton frazzled with his high flying. Orton would demand his re-match (and eventual re-matches) week after week until Orton figures things out and decimates Hardy at the PPV before WrestleMania. I could see Ross sullenly saying, “Well, it looks like Orton finally got Hardy’s number”, as Orton gives that consuming stare into the belt after a month of hard-fought losses to Hardy. This would elevate both Hardy and Orton, as Hardy’s style is something that Orton really hasn’t had to contend with before. It would show that he’s continuing to learn even while on top of his game, and it would show Hardy as a credible personality when given his moment to shine over his opponents. Hardy would only really have to cut one promo - the night after he wins the belt on Raw - saying how thankful he is to the fans. He then gets interrupted by a seething Orton, who can then carry the promo for Hardy. Ross and King could really sell the story without much mic time for either if they establish the fact that Hardy’s high flying is throwing the young former champ for a loop.
