TORCH QUESTION OF THE WEEK Reax #2: Comparisons to Rey Mysterio when considering Jeff Hardy as WWE champion Dec 19, 2007 - 2:20:59 AM
For this week's question of the week, we asked Torch readers for their thoughts on whether Jeff Hardy would make a good WWE champion, defined by how he would fare as a main event draw for the company. Does he have the ability to turn superstar pops in arenas into PPV buys, ticket sales, and more merchandise revenue? You can still contribute! Click on the Contact Us link above and send James Caldwell an email with your thoughts on Hardy as champion. This batch looks at a previous undersized World champ, Rey Mysterio, and how the booking could be similar for Jeff Hardy if he were to win the WWE Title.
Matthew McIntyre, Torch reader: It would come down to the booking. Jeff comes across to me as a Rey Mysterio-like main-eventer. While closer in size to a Shawn Michaels or Eddie Guerrero, Hardy doesn't have the superkick that would realistically knock bigger opponents down for the three count. He also doesn't have the cheat-to-win gimmick to allow him to get cheap wins without losing credibility. I feel Hardy would wind up being booked to get fluke victories, much like Mysterio did when he was champion. That being said, I think it'd be important to give Jeff his title-winning victory against someone that the fans hate. When Mysterio won, I think people would've rather had Angle as champion. Then, they booked Rey to lose half of his non-title matches. To not repeat the same mistake, Hardy beating someone like Orton or Cena or Edge would be necessary. After two-to-three months of retaining the title by hook or by crook, Hardy could drop the title and have had a successful, albeit short, title reign.
Mikel, Torch reader of Las Vegas, Nev.: I believe Jeff Hardy would only serve well as a transitional champion. He reminds me very much of Rey Mysterio. Rey was a champion who you wanted to see win the belt, was okay when he did, but after a while you wanted to see him drop it as soon as possible. Jeff Hardy beating Randy Orton would be quite the sight to see, and you would enjoy it, but only if he were to drop it one month later in a rematch or possibly even at WrestleMania. Hardy isn't the type of character that a show should revolve around, but he is indeed that supporting character that you want to give glory to every once in a while.
Rjordu Portominu, Torch reader of Winnipeg, Manitoba: Remember when they said Mick Foley wouldn't sell tickets? Of course, that was in the middle of the competitive days of Raw versus Nitro, and Foley was playing pin cushion for the likes of The Rock and the Corporate Ministry. The main problem that Hardy faces is that other than a fluke win over Triple H a few years ago, Hardy has not proven himself in the ring against other major superstars to justify any title shot. While indeed Hardy is a breath of fresh air at the top, a title run would probably steer head-on into a brick wall in time for Triple H to hold the belt high at WrestleMania 24 in Orlando.
