TNA Against All Odds PPV Reax #1: " Of all the excessive interference used, the one least needed was Kong's assistant." Feb 11, 2008 - 2:09:38 AM
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (6.5): Best: Machine Guns/Lethal vs. 3D/Devine Worst: way too much interference! Right out of the gate, my score is based on the play-by-play reviews as opposed to actually seeing the PPV. TNA wants so bad to swing for the fences, yet barely seems to be able to swing a double inside the park. Less is more when it comes to PPVs, except for the strictly gimmick matches (Abyss-Judas/Mitchell and MCMGs/Lethal-3D/Devine) specifically designed to have bells and whistles in them. Of all the excessive interference used, the one least needed was Kong's assistant. I suppose it was meant to protect ODB somewhat, but it takes Kong down a peg from her unstoppable persona. Her speaking on behalf of Kong is acceptable; distracting opponents for her isn't. My major soapbox issue outside all the interference is that Williams needed the win more than Steiner at this in his career. And with Lethal getting the Rocky win and getting the X Title, thereby keeping the X Division alive, odds are Steiner won't bat an eyelash about taking an X Title opportunity. He won't do it, so what was the whole point? Petey may not be taken seriously as a main event and world title hopeful, but there is much more potential in his making those cases useful. It didn't work for Styles and Daniels when Sirelda was brought in; what makes TNA and Steiner think it's going to help with that woman in play? With the extremely lousy build for the Angle-Christian main event, I knew Angle was going over. He's held the title since June if I'm not mistaken, which should give the title prestige by longevity. But the title has no prestige at all at the moment and the main event did nothing to help that. As for Tomko, I'm waiting till Thursday to see and hear the explanation for his actions. If it plays that he attacked Christian (still a needy soul) much like he did Angle a few weeks ago, wanting desperately to be left alone, then this is accomplished. If Tomko goes back the Angle Alliance, then the turn and everything about it was all for nothing.
Tremont Nichols: The Abyss-Messias brawl had some pretty sick looking spots, but they should have used the barbed wire more. The Black Hole Slam on the barbed wire was the best spot in the match, but I would have loved to see James Mitchell go through the barbed wire also. The six-man tornado match started off great and ended great. It was filled with nice spots, but in watching it, I raised a few eyebrows. Why weren't the Machine Guns shown for most of the match? Were They Injured? Also, TNA made this match mostly about Lethal being pissed at Team-3D touching So Cal Val. I thought Devine was going to turn on TeamĀ 3-D though. I loved the ending of Lethal pinningĀ Devine on the table. The main event was like watching Nitro in 1998. You were just looking to the left of your screen to see when was the first person going to interfere. I like that TNA gave Cage and Angle 20-25 min. The way Angle started reminded you of that WM match with him Orton and Mysterio. He was a wrestling machine. Now if TNA would have cut backstage segment out with the wedding vows, it would have made the start look even more impressive. Angle seemed pumped up. TNA didn't put to much focus on Samoa Joe. Also, Tomko turning on Cage was too predictable, but still the best match of the night. A storyline-based PPV; if only TNA was this good every Thursday night.
