TNA Impact Reax #1: "I wasn't rolling my eyes over the storylines, but nearly choked on the sheer amount of content." Jun 6, 2008 - 11:23:56 AM
Andre Polizzi of San Jose, Calif. 38, Courier/Sports Announcer (6.0): Best Match: X-Division King of the Mountain match. Worst Match: Awesome Kong vs. WCW Daffney. A decent, though laborious, edition of Impact. Being on the West Coast, and with my regular shows CSI and Lost in summer reruns I had nothing to stop me from watching Impact in its regular time slot for once, instead of on DVR. I can't imagine being on the East Coast, though, and watching Impact over the NBA Finals. I was satisfied with several of the matches tonight. The X-Division KOTM match, the six-man tag match, and the ODB vs Velvet Sky street fight were all worthy of my time, and had 95 percent of my attention. The Booker T & Robert Roode vs. Rhino & Christian Cage match was fine too, but I just can't fathom Booker and Roode teaming this soon after their war. Ludicrous. The A.J. Styles vs. Tomko match was too short to be good, and the Kong challenge was awful and insulting. It's ironic that Caldwell mused about "58 women on the roster" yet the only twp used in the bachelor party skits were ODB and Christy Hemme, the two least desirable women on the roster. Also on the negative side: the TNA "interview segments" except for the Beautiful People and A.J. Styles were brutal. Scott Steiner, Petey, and the freak: awful. Kurt and Karen Angle: tedious. Tenay and Sting: must've cut about four minutes out. Eric Young: should've cut four minutes out. Abyss: please give him a NEW storyline immediately. Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash: eyes rolling. So here are my three choices for Sunday evening: TNA Slammiversary PPV at home, WWE Smackdown/ECW live here in San Jose at HP Pavillion, seven miles from my house, or Celtics-Lakers game two at the sports bar. Guess which one I'll be watching? You, too?
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (9.0): Best: X Division KOTM match; focus on the PPV Worst: way too much happening toward PPV. For the most part, I wasn't rolling my eyes over the storylines, but nearly choked on the sheer amount of content. Will TNA ever learn to slow things down? Sure, they have a PPV coming Sunday, and they have done pretty well, but with so much stuff happening it became counterproductive. While it was cool to showcase what that KOTM match is by way of the X Division to give potential viewers, a full blown free TV showing may have just killed the drama of the world title version. The Velvet-ODB street fight wasn't very much period, but the crowd got into the fact that the ladies got into the stands. And will Tenay and West please stop assuming that interference (Love/Sky's new friend) was the product of someone if they don't sincerely know that as fact? If Sonjay isn't totally recognized as a heel by Sunday, then I should give up whatever hope I may have for this storyline. The point-counterpoint segment was probably about the only way to put over the Angle-Styles match while not getting physical, but Karen's whiny voice so grated on my nerves I wanted to slap her like Cher in Moonstruck and yell "Snap out of it!" Angle should not, I repeat, should NOT be in the ring on Sunday. (On second thought, maybe that's why Karne sounded the way she did.) And while it had every look of accident, me thinks a screwjob is in the works for KOTM, especially considering the constant trivia mention of the champion not defending the title at Slammiversary. If the belt is coming off Joe at Slammiversary, and I would rather it not happen, I'd like to see it passed to Roode, as he is the only other non-WWE wrestler in the match. But that's just me.
