Wayne Maye of Richmond, Va. - Customer Service. (3.5): Best Match: Triple H vs. Cena. Worst Match: Mickie James vs. Katie Lea. I was anticipating this PPV quite a bit, but after watching it last night, I'm not entirely convinced it was the show that WWE was aiming to have; more on that later. WWE Tag Team Titles, Morrison & Miz vs. Finlay & Hornswoggle: Average. U.S. Title, Matt Hardy vs. Chavo Guerrero: Above average. Triple Threat match for the ECW title, Kane vs. Big Show vs. Mark Henry: Somewhat of a foregone conclusion, otherwise, average at best. World Tag Team Titles, Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly vs. Ted Dibiase & mystery partner: Predictable. Intercontinental Title, Chris Jericho vs. Kofi Kingston: Pretty good. Women's Title, Mickie James vs. Katie Lea: Okay for the most part. World Heavyweight Title, Edge vs. Batista: Decent match, couldn't stand the finish. WWE Title, Triple H vs. John Cena: Excellent. Overall, this show was a disappointment to me. I didn't imagine that they would have both champions on Smackdown. They didn't do it in 2005 when Cena was drafted from Smackdown while Batista was champion on Raw, so why should they do it now? I had more questions when this show was over, completely frustrated about the direction of WWE. I've been a fan for 20 years and counting, so it has to be something if I'm making a comment like that. Also, after thinking about the draft last week, I don't think the draft will change anything. It'll still be the same ol same ol, no matter who moves to which show. Raw should be an interesting show tonight, but for the most part, this show came off as completely pointless outside of Kingston's win, Mark Henry at least showing some emotion when winning the ECW Title, and the main event.
Sam Weiss of San Deigo, Calif.: (8.0): Overall an enjoyable PPV, Night of Champions surprised me twice. Worst Match: ECW Title. Best Match: Tough call. I found myself enjoying the first match and really don't mind Hornswoggle competing as it allows the heels to present themselves as being despicable. Also, the women's match had its moments, perhaps because I find M. James so fetching. The first surprise of the night was Kofi Kingston (and I think it is a very good move). Tthe second surprise was Hunter keeping the belt. It also seems that the preferred path for getting one of the world championships back on Raw is through C.M. Punk cashing in his contract; I look forward to him doing that soon and probably on Edge.
Jeremy Quist of Lynchburg, Va. (8.0): Best Match: Triple H vs. John Cena. Worst Match: Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly vs. Ted DiBiase Jr. & Cody Rhodes. I thought this was an excellent show. I loved Batista press slamming Vickie over the top rope. Hunter and Cena have great chemistry. They remind me of Steve Austin and the Rock. Kofi Kingston is fun to watch. That was my first time ever watching a whole match of his. I know that they are just making up for the Michael Hayes incident, but I was glad to see Mark Henry win the strap. I like his personality and hope that he receives more time to talk. I think it's time for Johnny Nitro to receive a singles push. He is an amazing athlete. Miz is like Marty Jannety, holding him down. Mickie and Katie did pretty good for their first PPV match; I'm hoping they have a rematch or two. Matt Hardy needs a new opponent. Edge is establishing himself as one of the better workers in wrestling history. I love Vickie's character. I am interested to see how the wedding angle goes. The Triple H and Cena match was just fantastic. I also noticed that Hunter switched injured knees, but that was about the only thing he did wrong all night. Jerry Lawler was carrying Michael Cole well. I loved how the King pointed out that after Cena missed his second Five Knuckle Shuffle that perhaps he forgot who he was in the ring with. "That's Triple H!" When Cena looked back, and Triple H looked at him and shook his head as if to say "it's all tied up now boy, and I'm the WWE Champion." That moment is what makes a show special. I cannot give enough praise to both guys for giving us fans everything that they had. In my opinion, that was the Match of the Year to date. Many will argue Ric Flair vs. Michaels, but I disagree. Cena and Triple H are the biggest two names in the business and they held the crowd in the palm of their hand. The people telling Cena that he can't wrestle had their mouths surgically closed last night.
