WWE ECW Reax #1: "Todd Grisham did fine as play-by-play, and Tazz seemed to enjoy working with him." Jul 30, 2008 - 3:11:48 PM
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (7.0): Best: Miz/Morrison vs. Finlay/Horny. Worst: misuse of artist formerly known as Chris Harris. All I'm going to say about Mike Adamle here is that the apple is out and the orange (Todd Grisham) is in. Grisham and Tazz seem fluid enough to work together, but I refuse to make comparisons. Matt Hardy handled himself well on the mic until he was interrupted by Tony Atlas and Mark Henry. I still don't know why Henry needs a mouthpiece in general, but Atlas does serve well - mispronunciations and all - to help put over Henry's strength. Hardy stayed with it, though, and didn't seem too intimidated. Ortiz gets win #2 in an odd DQ way. The idea of being DQ'd by being caught having Bam's hands on Chavo's foot while making a leverage pin seems kinda lame, but how often does anyone get caught doing this? The ref could also plausibly be keeping a mental history of Chavo's recent cheating in mind. Evan making the sneaky save keeps Ortiz a relative face as well as moves the Evan-Chavo feud along. Colin Delaney is a naive heel, not a common way to be. It is also clear that Henry and Atlas are being users. They make distractive use of Colin in a just slightly different way than Chavo uses Bam: Chavo directs traffic while Henry and Atlas use some form of charm or intimidation to get their use-ees to do what they want. Knox picking up the pieces of Finlay and Hornswoggle seem to signal the end of Miz/Morrison-Finlays and a start to Knox-Finlay. Knox's post angle promo was short and to the point that Finlay's grown soft; good point to make. What was the point of having Braden on (in a bad promo to start with) if he wasn't going to factor in one bit in the finish? If only Colin wasn't so limited by his gimmick, then I'd think a Hardy-Delaney match would have some real promise.
Dan Strauss of Goodhue, Minn. (7.5): Best: Main Event. Worst: Nothing too bad. ECW put on a decent show, and isn't that a few in a row now? Todd Grisham did fine as play-by-play, and Tazz seemed to enjoy working with him. I think we all know why ECW came up with a new belt... so it could fit the current champ. That thing is huge. Just for kicks I'd like to see him put it on Delaney with the same size setting; it would probably drop to the floor. Anyway, it's too bad that ECW doesn't really have any other talented people for Finlay, Miz, and Morrison to face, so they just keep facing each other every week. The segment with Walker backstage before the main event was odd, not sure where that will go. Must be to give Walker a rub because I don't think anyone on this roster can boost Hardy's status. Main event was good. Hardy looked focused as he pounded Delaney and kept an eye on Henry, and the announcers did a good job of putting it over, saying "he could probably end this match any time he wanted to." Delaney took a crazy bump at the end. Ouch! The finale went well, a pretty intense staredown. Overall a decent show, I just wonder how long they can keep it up with such a thin roster.
