WWE Raw Reax #1: "C.M. Punk's title reign ended months ago, but hey, he's finally in the main event!"

Dan Strauss of Goodhue, Minn. (8.0): Best: Most of the show. Worst: Hardy vs. Regal. WWE took a big step outside of the box by starting the show in a different way. It was interesting to see Stephanie on TV again but the segment quickly became unbelievable and heavily scripted, with the brightest spot being Santino's laugh-out-loud humor. Later on, Batista gave a good promo, bringing some history into his feud with Orton. HBK can be very funny, but his sarcastic humor tonight was too much and made it look like he was patronizing Mysterio. The match itself against Miz/Morrison was good. The heel tag team finally got a solid win over quality opponents, and I hope they keep getting quality airtime. The Hardy-Regal match was bad. If the problem was that Matt had already wrestled on the night, then why send him out there again? A well-rested Matt Hardy against Regal could have been a great match, so why throw them together for a one-minute count out? C.M. Punk's title reign ended months ago, but hey, he's finally in the main event! I thought the match was all right, but not given enough time. Overall, I thought the show continued to show improvement for the Raw brand with some different feuds developing. WWE hasn't built up Survivor Series much, but they played catch-up tonight, and I think it worked.

Eric Gall of Bridgeport, Conn. (4.0): High Point: Jericho's promo, Knox attacking Bourne. Low Point: Opening and closing segments. Raw has jumped the shark. It's not dead; I'm sure it will be around for a while. It's clear, though, that rather being serious about changing its ten-year-old formula for Raw's format and its "muscle first, main event first" booking philosophy, WWE will only bring us a different Raw if its international forays don't reap the rewards it seeks there. Oh sure, bright spots like Jericho will continue to shine. After all, the best in the business will take the money after sacrificing so much for so long in the indies. But seeing promising talents and proven greats get fed to the chosen few week after week, PPV after PPV, with no change in sight, with no fresh direction of the programming, it further erodes my enthusiasm to all things WWE. I'm not alone, either. I saw the Lesnar-Couture fight Saturday at the same place I see WWE PPVs and it was a night and day difference. The Lesnar fight packed the place tighter than I've ever seen it; WWE PPVs are lucky to get it three-fourths full these days. ... The fact that JBL got off the pedestal and let Michaels direct his question to Stephanie so the cameras could get a wide one-shot really exposed the business, as did the entire roster inexplicably leaving the ring after Michaels attacked JBL. ... Tonight's show told us Jericho will be sacrificed upon the altar of the returning hero of John Cena, so the WrestleMania "dream match" of him and Batista can begin to be put into motion. Better start booking WrestleMania in London or Tokyo, Vince; the same-old, same-old will catch up with you.
