WWE Raw Reax #2: "Two things about the Slammys stood out as being wrong..."

Sam Weiss of San Diego, Calif. (8.5): Best match: Punk vs. Morrison. Worst: a couple of the Slammy presentations. Demonstrated for us tonight was the deep talent pool from which the WWE may draw to create a show. While a few of the Slammy presentations were awkward - especially the handling of the Knox moment - most of the in-ring action was good-to-great. The announcing was a bit confusing, with the announcers on a couple of occasions driving my attention in opposite directions while I'm trying to watch the match. Of the matches in particular, I especially appreciated the energy put forward by Punk and Morrison and the overall effort being given to rebuild the IC Title belt. Kudos to Beth Phoenix and Melina, who were able to move forward their story in a very brief amount of time and with real conviction. So now we come to where there is a weakness in the Raw formula - there just is not enough time (in a two-hour show) to properly develop and present all the stories that are floated. A three-hour show feels a bit long, but with all the commercials, and of course the brand-item promotions, a three-hour show is needed for all the stars to be able to get screen time to further their efforts. Witness for example tonight's Mysterio vs. Kingston match. That match deserved to be twice, or three times, as long as it turned out to be. Yet, a three-hour show is too much on a regular basis. For a television show, both Raw and Smackdown have too many "stars" and stories for the time allotted. Tonight's Raw was a good show, but also highlighted the challenges when one's "cup runneth over."

Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (8.5): Best: Morrison vs. Punk. Worst: Truth vs. Ziggler. Raw needed the extra hour for everything it needed to do. Miz & Morrison's Tag Team of the Year win was on target, plus it smoothly segued into the Morrison-Punk match. Their acceptance speech reminded me of Affleck and Damon when they won the Oscar for "Good Will Hunting." "Legacy" is a good name for the Orton stable, as it ties to the past, present, and future. Twice on the night, heel rivals stole away awards (Knox for Bourne, JBL for Michaels). Two bullies from two different perspectives - nicely done. Santino suffers again for his art, but it was fun to watch. Beth-Melina is back on, and I'm interested to see it until Mickie is 100 percent. The crowd was hot at the beginning, but slowly lost interest by the end. Ziggler-Truth didn't help matters; that was brutal to watch. Not sure who's responsible for the botched rope spot, but I'm leaning toward Truth on that one. Ziggler's chest-first bump into the corner a la Bret Hart was ugly, as his head whiplashed harshly and the noise of the hit was loud. The crowd clearly expected something else to happen during the Edge-Cena match, which took away from it. Just a few weeks back, and Cena is right back where he was before this injury. Not a good place to be with that. Two things about the Slammys stood out as being wrong: Kozlov's win as Breakout Performer (should have been Bourne), and Cena's nomination for Superstar of the Year (since earlier in the program it was said that Melina wasn't nominated for Diva of the Year for spending much of the year on the DL). It worked for Jericho's acceptance speech that Cena was nominated, though. What would have helped Jericho's promo even more: Shawn being nominated, as he and Cena are equitable in Jericho's eyes. Raw is fairly ready for Armageddon, even if the card isn't all that strong.
