WWE Smackdown/ECW TV taping
December 1, 2007
Roanoke, Va. at the Civic Center
Report by Julian Austin, PWTorch.com correspondent
Hey guys, I attended the ECW-Smackdown taping here at the Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke Virginia. I just wanted to give you guys some quick results of the action along with what I thought about it. Overall, I thought the show was good but not the best I've seen. The guys (and gals) gave a a pretty good show.
DARK MATCH
(1) Victoria won a match over a wrestler that I didn't get to catch her name because the bass was turned up too loud on the arena speakers. Victoria got only 2 seconds worth of music and her opponent I didn't know her name because the arena speakers were down. All I can tell you it was good back and forth action. The opponent was a blond girl built similar to Beth Phoenix but I know it wasn't her. Victoria ended it with a Widows Peak to win the match. The speakers were back working by the end of this match.
Ring Announcer Justin Roberts introduced JBL and Michael Cole. JBL got some major heel heat by the Roanoke audience. Funny part was when he was doing his "JBL shuffle" he smacked Michael Cole on the ass. Crowd got a good reaction to that.
SMACKDOWN
Edge came out and cut a good promo on how he was mistreated by the WWE fans during his injury and the only one that showed that they cared for him during his injury was Vickie Guerrero. The fans were letting him have it chanting Eddie!, Eddie! Edge then said he loved Vickie Guerrero and said its hard enough for a woman to make it in a male dominated business and then went on to say that the Undertaker was a coward for going after a woman instead of him. (crowd is letting him have it at this point) He goes on to say that he will seek revenge on the Undertaker and do it for Vickie.
Video package aired of Mark Henry vs. Hornswoggle from last week when Finlay interfered. We see that Finlay and Hornswoggle will be in action vs. Deuce/Domino.
(1) Hornswoggle & Finlay defeated Deuce & Domino (w/Cherry). I don't like Deuce & Domino at all and my friend made it worse because he is a huge fan of theirs and I cannot explain why. They don't impress me at all. Deuce is okay with a little work, Domino is just another big man to me. Cherry just skates around and that's all she's good for except to look at. Hornswoggle chased Cherry around the ring. It distracted the greasers long enough so Finlay could grab the shillelagh ( I can barely say it much less spell it) and nail Domino with it to set up a tadpole..i mean frog splash from Hornswoggle to win the match for his team. Afterwards Finlay put on horny's hat and they started dancing around. The crowd seems to really be into Finlay now and of course Hornswoggle.
Video Package aired of Edge defeating Mr. Kennedy on Raw back in May to win the Money in the Bank stipulation and cashing it in on Smackdown against the Undertaker
Jamie Noble cut a promo hitting on Michelle McCool and saying that he was the New England Patriots of Smackdown. Chuck Palumbo intervened saying he got lucky last week or something like that. I was too busy laughing at Noble when he said don't count your eggs before they hatch comment he said to Chuck when he said he was gonna beat him.
(2) ECW Champion C.M. Punk defeated Kenny Dykstra. I thought this was random placement of the ECW Champion but this was not a bad match as Dykstra got some moves in. Not much to really speak of about this match as Punk won with the GTS.
Video package showed Edge defending the World Title at Judgement Day.
.(3) Kane & Rey Mysterio beat Big Daddy V w/Matt Striker and MVP in a tag team match. The babyfaces were over huge in this match. Every time Rey would get in trouble a 619 chant would break out. Big Daddy V is horrible in the ring. He got in a sidewalk slam on Kane and tagged out after two moves to get a breather. MVP was doing all the work in this match. Match ends with a 619 and west coast pop on MVP to get the win. Afterwards Kane shook Rey's hand and lifted his hand up in the air.
Video Package showed the cage match from One Night Stand between Edge and Batista.
Backstage Mr. McMahon and The Great Khali's translator were in the back. He was making fun of Hornswoggle. Mr. McMahon liked what he saw and demanded he do another imitation this time of his father. He hesitated but Mr. McMahon made him anyway. So he made like he was handing Mr. McMahon a cup of coffee and like Apu from the Simpsons said "thank you come again" Then Mr.McMahon asked him to do an imitation of the Great Khali. So he did up until Khali was towering behind him. McMahon left and the translator guy tried to talk his way out of a beating.
(4) Jamie Noble defeated Chuck Palumbo (w/Michelle McCool). Palumbo got a good reaction from the fans. To me this gimmick has been done before (DOA, Undertaker) and its Chuck Palumbo. He's been through gimmick hell. (Chuck and Billy fiasco, Full Blooded Italian) Jamie Noble wins with a roll up to give him two wins over Palumbo in two weeks. Nice to see Noble get a well deserved push after all against the right guy he's a good worker even back to his days in WCW when he was a Jung Dragon..Oh i'm having flashbacks of his masked japanese guy character.
Video Package aired of the "Last Chance" match between Edge and Batista from Vengeance.
A new backstage announcer which I didn't catch her name interviewed Batista before his match with Edge. I couldn't make out what he was saying but it was along the same lines of his promo from last weeks show.
(5) World Heavyweight Champion Batista defeated Edge by disqualification to retain World Title. This was not one of their better matches by any means. Crowd was into it though. Batista had Edge set up for the Batista Bomb when the lights went out and The Undertaker came out and attacked Batista. Edge scurried out of the way before damage could be done to him. All of a sudden Teddy Long came out. Teddy Long repeated the same words Vickie Guerrero uttered to Edge last week about why he interfered in such a good title match and the punishment would be a title shot. That was a funny line by Long who is a far better GM than Vickie Guerrero. He set up a triple threat match between Undertaker vs. Edge vs. Batista for the World Heavyweight Title at Armageddon. The Smackdown TV taping ends with Undertaker staring back at Batista and flipping his eyes in his head.
During the intermission a video played for tribute to the troops. Sharmell was seen twice in those videos. Funny because she is in TNA now.
I did not stay for the whole ECW part of the show because Punk wasn't advertised for ECW and he is supposed to be their champion? Who writes this crap. My friend told me the results afterwards...
DARK MATCH
(1) Drew Mcintyre defeated a jobber
Live Sci-fi broadcast started
(1) Kelly Kelly defeated Layla in a divas match where she looked like a Barbie doll and Torrie Wilson rolled into one.
(2) WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison defeated Jesse & Festus in a non-title match.
(3) Shelton Benjamin beat Shannon Moore.
(4) Big Daddy V beat Kane in an Extreme Rules match when Mark Henry interfered
Biggest Pops:
(1)Batista
(2)Jeff Hardy (they showed a video about him before the World Title match for the in house crowd to see)
(3)Rey Mysterio
(4)Undertaker
(5)CM Punk
Biggest Heat:
(1) Edge (The crowd let him have it all night
(2) JBL (especially when the he called Roanoke a Trailer Park Trash convention)
(3) MVP
(4) Mr.McMahon (when he appeared on the screen)
They did not announce a return date but the arena was pretty full in the parts they didn't block off which they blocked off a third of it. The funniest part all night was when JBL stopped the guy throwing t-shirts in the crowd and said the crowd paid to see JBL and they didn't deserve anything free and the guy shot a T-shirt at JBL's gut. Overall an okay show but the Smackdown roster is so thin to begin with you really didn't expect a lot (compared to Raw)
