Interview Highlights: JBL talks candidly about government regulation, current WWE run, and new energy drink Feb 14, 2008 - 6:26:16 PM
JBL has an interview on a variety of subjects, including his new "Mamajuana" energy drink, his physical condition getting back in the ring for WWE, and government regulation of pro wrestling, with Josh Stewart at the Long Island (N.Y.) Press.
Regarding regulation in pro wrestling, especially for steroids, JBL says he's not against regulation, but he's against regulation if the current U.S. government is handling it. He says government officials, such as politicians interviewing Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee yesterday, are "inept and pathetic".
He continued, "I don't believe in government regulation because I think our government, the people that run it, are obviously inept, because they haven't solved any of their own problems. How in the world could they solve any of our problems, or anybody else's?"
JBL talks about his current physical condition after returning to the ring last month. He says it was a tough decision to make on whether to go through the back rehabilitation to be physically able to wrestle again. "My back, which has caused me so many problems, the reason I had to retire, had gotten better, and I realized this was my chance to do what I wanted to do and go out like I wanted to go out," he says. "When I went out before, my body had deteriorated. I was out of shape, I was fat, and I don't like that memory being the last thing that I was in the ring."
Regarding WWE helping wrestlers make sound investments to grow their earnings, JBL said WWE has done a lot of good things by encouraging wrestlers to handle their money wisely. "WWE, I think, has done a relatively good job of educating guys about what they need to do and how they need to take care of their money," he says. "The thing is, you can't force anybody to do it. If they want to buy a dozen cars and two homes and live way beyond their means, they're going to do it no matter what."
The interview also includes JBL detailing how he got the idea for his energy drink, "rookie hazing" for younger wrestlers, and how WWE has turned into a very corporate business, as a publicly-traded company, where liability is a key issue.
