WrestleMania Media Buzz: USA Today, Daily News, TSN - Mayweather and Michaels speak about show Mar 27, 2008 - 1:10:17 PM
-In promoting the fact that Floyd Mayweather is going to be appearing Thursday on Canada's TSN Off the Record in the "Up Front" segment, Jay Onright plugged the fact during the final moments of TSN Sportscenter that he will be discussing his forthcoming match on Sunday at Wrestlemania 24. -The Philadelphia Daily News has a story on Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels. "Being a 16-year-old kid, watching Ric on TV and saying that's what I wanted to be, and then you fast forward some 20 years later to being close personal friends and to be the guy that he arguably has his last match with, is surreal," Michaels said. "He's the closest friend I ever had . . . I don't know if [these stipulations] are Ric's will, but I'm put in a situation by Ric and the WWE where he wants my best, and they want my best, but my best will result in the end of something historical, a legacy we may never see again. ... The fans should once again expect another 'WrestleMania' moment they thought they would never see," Michaels said. "Expect the unexpected, and for us to create something that will go down forever and ever in wrestling history. So for the millions and millions of people watching, keep your eyes peeled, because it's only going to happen once." [Thanks to PWTorch.com reader "The Nagasaki Dream" of the VIP Forum]
-USA Today published an article on Floyd Mayweather Jr. looking to increase his exposure at WrestleMania. "Any other fighter, you're like 'oh, he's a fighter, he's a boxer,"' Mayweather told the Associated Press in a phone interview. "With Floyd Mayweather, it's like, 'oh, well, you know what? He's an entertainer.' That's what I do. I entertain. Well, why not be with the biggest vehicle and the biggest entertainment company in the world?" Regarding breaking the WM buyrate record: "It's possible," he said. "We keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. WWE has the right machine, and we proved I'm the hottest thing on the market right now. If you can't sell nothing else, you can sell Floyd Mayweather." The article acknowledges that he's getting booed: Wrestling fans have booed Mayweather, cast as the arrogant "bad guy" out to take over professional wrestling. He says the crowd response doesn't matter, though he seems comfortable in the same type of role he played against De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton. "I don't even hear that," he said. "When you're having fun, you don't hear negativity." [Thanks to PWTorch.com reader Robert Taylor
