WrestleMania News: Another eyewitness report of fireworks mishap: "Scary as hell" Mar 31, 2008 - 12:40:13 PM
PWTorch.com reader Jeremy Maes sent the following report on the fireworks mishap at WrestleMania's conclusion last night...
Eric, Kevin and I were in the section where the fireworks fell last night. It was scary as hell. It appeared the fireworks got stuck. They were the spinning and quick flash type that run from the top of the arena and "land" on the stage causing a bigger explosion.
Once Undertaker won and the big show started, the first two, of a string of seven or eight, went off just fine. It was the later fireworks that appeared to have become bonded to the cable after the first few burned out and took off. Pieces of burnt paper and ash started to fall, but nothing lit was falling off. Then it got bad as the remaining fireworks started off and they melted right through the wiring.
Some got caught on the lighting rigs above us and they burned out, but they ended up igniting the rest of the fireworks. The remaining fireworks fell down and the wind caught some which spread them in sections 313 through 316. It appeared section 316 got hit the worst as a few rounds fell and then ignited as well as some already burning fell in to the middle of the bleacher section.
There was really nowhere to go as well as the steep incline made for a dangerous flight risk. So we had no choice but to just duck down and cover our heads. In hindsight that was pretty stupid as it just engulfed us in smoke, but no burning charges.
We could see one person instantly had an asthma attack and their group reacted quickly to get him an inhaler. Overall, it was just frightning. One thing that worked in our favor were the high winds. The smoke blew out very quickly as it had all night.
If anyone else attended WrestleMania in person and can send details regarding the fireworks mishap or any other live observations, we welcome you to send them in for future posts.
