WWE News: Former Nitro co-host and Torch columnist, Mark Madden, comments on his friend Flair Mar 31, 2008 - 2:14:33 PM
Former PWTorch columnist and WCW Nitro co-host Mark Madden, now hosting a sports radio show in Pittsburgh, Pa., posted the following in the PWTorch VIP Forum this afternoon...
In case anyone's interested, here's a bit from my opening monologue for today's show. I'll be writing a full-fledged column about Ric Flair for timesonline.com that will be published a week from today. Last night was absolutely brilliant, by the way. There's no debating it. A moment for the ages. I still tear up just thinking about it:
Last night at WM, time absolutely stood still. At 59, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair combined with the absolutely amazing Shawn Michaels to give us one last great memory for the ages. I cried after... I cried during Ric's WWE HoF induction on USA Network Saturday night... my God, never has being so happy made me cry so much.
Hey, I'm the lucky one. I talk to Ric Flair all the time, he will continue to be on this show, he will continue to be my friend, and thank God for video, cos no one ever did it better.
I've often mentioned this, but my radio persona is largely patterned on Ric Flair, a guy so convinced he's the best that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Only thing is... Flair does it even better than me. To which I can only add an emphatic WHOOO!
I would be remiss, too, if I didn't thank Shawn Michaels, the HBK, for the job he did building Ric's last match up and especially what he did in the ring last night. I think I speak for Ric Flair fans everywhere when I say that, and I hope... at some point... I get the chance to thank Shawn personally... maybe even on this show. He was, indeed, the showstopper. In fact, HBK might keep me watching wrestling just a bit longer.
Is Ric gonna stay retired? Well... I think we're gonna see the father-son tag team of Ric and Reid Flair at least once... on a special occasion... but I think it's very safe to say that Ric Flair is finished as a full-time performer. He finished with a bang...not a whimper.
Great line by Triple H when he inducted Flair into the WWE HoF Saturday. "I often hear it said that Ric Flair is 'arguably' the greatest wrestler of all time. How come I have yet to hear the argument against that? Because there is no argument against that." Amen.
