WWE News: Dusty Rhodes describes training workshop in Florida, his greatest moment ever in wrestling (w/VIDEO)

By James Caldwell, PWTorch columnist

One of the interesting news items from Dusty Rhodes's interview with ign.com is his description of a workshop he holds every Wednesday at WWE's training facility in Tampa, Fla. Dusty describes it as a chance for him to watch the students cut promos, but in a modern setting of trying to entertain the crowd and connect with the audience.

"I have a workshop that's something on the level of (being in) Hollywood with an actor's studio," Rhodes said in the interview. "The workshop is an opportunity to do interviews and skits in front of me. It's not 'I'm going to beat this guy on Friday night down at the 'ole Armory.' It's more of a creative avenue for them to express themselves. My fun is critiquing them and getting involved with it to see them move up."

Rhodes was also asked about the intangible "it" factor that some wrestlers have and some wrestlers don't have. He said his son, Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase, Jr. have that factor. "I can say it as proud as a papa can be that Cody Rhodes has it," Rhodes said.

His last body of work was the Hall of Fame induction and American Dream WWE DVD release, but he doesn't see his career over, as he still wants to contribute and work on projects, in addition to his work in Florida at FCW.

"Seeing the night that Cody Rhodes and Goldust, Dustin, inducted me was the most amazing moment of my whole career of anything that I've ever done," he said about his 2007 Hall of Fame induction. "Nothing can compare to that - selling out buildings, winning World's championships, being a great entertainer, being on TV, doing movies. There was nothing like that moment that happened."

Caldwell's Analysis: You can see the trickle down effect of WWE pushing its brand of scripted competition as "entertainment" rather than "sports entertainment" all the way to the training school in Florida. And that's how it should be if WWE is taking this approach of building stars who can not also excite a wrestling crowd, but do a TV spot for Gillette or make an appearance on Nickelodeon.

WWE wants two and three-dimensional wrestlers who can do skits backstage and not be limited to just being a wrestler. Dusty Rhodes touched on that in his interview that he's not just teaching the students how to cut a promo, but interact with an audience. Over time, we'll see how well the students that move up to the major leagues can handle the task.
