WWE News: Honky Tonk Man says he wasn't supposed to be at Cyber Sunday; describes whether voting was legitimate

Honky Tonk Man (Roy Wayne Ferris) made a very rare WWE TV appearance at the Cyber Sunday PPV, followed by an appearance on the Oct. 27 Raw. In the days leading up to the PPV, Ferris wasn't even supposed to be on the PPV.

"They were originally going to have Charlie Haas dress up and go out and do this," Ferris told the Live Audio Wrestling show earlier this week. "The rehab came along very well and Thursday they had called and said 'can you still do the shake, rattle, and roll?' and I said 'well of course I can do that' and that was case closed."

Ferris was rehabbing an injury suffered at an autograph signing for Boston Pizza in July when an overzealous publicity person nearly severed his finger doing a spot with two guitars. He wasn't sure if he would be able to make the Cyber Sunday show as a result, and he didn't think he would be voted in to the match against Santino Marella.

"This voting thing is extremely legitimate. It was a very close race between myself and Piper," Ferris said. "I went there thinking I wasn't going to have to do anything either. I'm just making a little cameo appearance, but I ended up being in the ring for about 40-45 seconds and it worked out very well."

Ferris isn't sure if a WWE Hall of Fame induction is coming, but he's not planning for it. He said he's working on his independent booking schedule for the next five months until March to keep himself busy.

Caldwell's Analysis: We had several Torch readers speculate prior to the Cyber Sunday PPV that the winner of the Honky, Goldust, and Piper voting would be portayed by Charlie Haas going against Santino. Turns out our readers were correct, as WWE made a last-second call to go with the actual Honky Tonk Man.

FYI: Prior to the Cyber Sunday PPV, Ferris had not appeared on WWE TV since 2001 when he made a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble. He was briefly a color commentator in 1997 prior to managing Billy Gunn as "Rockabilly." Ferris's last legitimate push in WWE was in the very early 1990s when he teamed with Greg Valentine as "Rhythm and Blues" prior to a brief stint as color commentator on the syndicated "Superstars of Wrestling" show.
