WWE issued a press release this morning promoting Sunday's Royal Rumble PPV with the theme that the event is sold-out in Detroit, but wrestling fans should order the PPV for all of these wonderful reasons.

First, WWE touted the success of nearly selling-out Joe Louis Arena in Detroit - "one of the most depressed markets in the country."

CEO Linda McMahon said in the release that WWE considers itself "the best value in entertainment," beyond anything produced in boxing or by UFC.

"We give more bang for the buck at live events and pay per views," McMahon said. "You're guaranteed 3 hours of electrifying action. No quick knockouts or submissions as in boxing or mixed martial arts."

The release provides some information that WWE's demographic studies indicate an average of four people watch a PPV event per household, making the $39.95 price tag (before tax) a great deal at $10 per person.

Caldwell's Analysis: WWE was obviously not happy with PPV business in the fourth quarter of 2008 because they've certainly gone into a "full court press" (excuse the Mike Tenayism) to promote Sunday's Royal Rumble. The new marketing video packages of creating remorse for not experiencing events like John Cena's surprise return at last year's Rumble, WrestleMania 24, or Jeff Hardy's first WWE Title victory have shown WWE's commitment to the PPV business this year.

Now, the press release avenue is being explored to tout what a "steal of a deal" WWE offers with PPV shows at an affordable price compared to a UFC event. There's still an inferiority complex with WWE continually knocking UFC for quick bouts involving major players, but people still come back for more with every passing UFC card. When was the last time WWE topped 1.0 million domestic buys?
