KELLER'S TAKE
KELLER: John Cena is the perfect son Vince McMahon never had Nov 25, 2008 - 3:57:21 PM
Sure, Vince McMahon has a son. Shane McMahon. But those who know Vince and Linda and Shane and Steph the best, will tell you that Shane is his mother's son and Stephanie is her father's daughter. Obviously, Shane and Vince love each other. They're not estranged from one another. Shane is involved in the family business on the corporate side.
But let's be real. If Vince McMahon had been asked 25 years ago to describe his ideal son, he'd have described John Cena.
Vince loves to workout and is obsesses with the muscular male body form. John Cena has been obsessed with his body and working out since he was a teenager. Shane? He's a little pudgy. He's not going shirtless anytime soon. He's got his mother's features and demeanor (and perspective on life). He's not power hungry or manipulative. He's got diverse interests, be it his wife and kids or MMA or having fun outside of the context of WWE.
Vince's entire life is WWE. Vacation? Nope. Other interests? Nope. Can't wait to retire? Nope. Same with John Cena. As Triple H has pointed out in the Cena profile videos, "WWE is Cena's wife and kids."
Cena's promo on Raw last night embodied everything Vince McMahon, in the fantasy world he lives in, imagines WWE to be. It's a great place for fans to express themselves, hold up signs, show enthusiasm, laugh and cheer and cry and boo. WWE is "all about fun" and "wholesome family entertainment."
Cena's promo last night, I would guess, might be Vince McMahon's favorite ever on one of his TV shows. Cena expressed, believably so, such an optimistic, positive, pro-entertainment, pro-fan view of WWE, Vince McMahon had to be smiling like a proud father.
Cena and Vince go to concerts together. They travel together. They work out together. They share the same single-minded obsession. (Well, Vince did get married and have kids, but that was before he realized his dream of running WWE.)
Cena made his father proud last night. Both of them.
