Ring of Honor's Driven pay-per-view was both a great wrestling show and something of relief for anyone worn down from the steady stream of either lackluster (WWE) or aggravatingly awful (TNA) pay-per-views the so-called major companies have ponied up lately.
The ROH show built in a natural, solid way to its main event, whether it was featuring their World Champion Morishima, future contender Marafuji, the amazingly improved Claudio Castagnoli, or even Brent Albright in matches designed to set them up for bigger things down the line or showing off fresh new talkers like Larry Sweeney and Adam Pearce. Driven was two hours of what pro wrestling can be and isn't much anymore, (and boy, is a tight two hour show a revelation compared to the bloated two-hour-and-forty-five minute-whether-we've-got-it-or-not mediocrities every Sunday night).
***image1***Still, even the heel World Champion Morishima, who is either going to make a main eventer or kick one to the relative stratosphere, was just set up for the epic main event between Bryan "Best In The World" Danielson and Nigel McGuiness. It may very have been the Match of this Year. This was a tough, dramatic, athletic match, and, make no mistake, in its way it was a very real, very physical contest between two performers driven to cement their place in their part of the business. The match built and built to a climax that, at another point in the business, might have cemented the two as working legends.
Instead, the climax of the match, and the show - Danielson and McGuiness cracking heads again and again until Danielson sprouted a blood bruise, was an ugly reminder of what has to change about this business. The Saturday night the show was...
