MITCHELL'S BLOG: Notes From the 2008 NWA Fanfest - Ric Flair Aug 17, 2008 - 5:27:22 PM
As expected Ric Flair, in one of his first appearances since he left World Wrestling Entertainment, was the star of the four-day NWA Fanfest at the Hilton this weekend in his Charlotte hometown. He came out before his Friday afternoon autograph/personal photo session and gave a brief thank-you speech.
Flair was introduced by the thirty-year veteran voice of Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, Bob Caudle, who was either one of the first, or maybe even the first, man to interview Flair on a wrestling show.
Caudle said it was always easy, "All I had to do was say 'Here's Ric Flair' and he was off and running for five minutes."
Flair made a point of recognizing and hugging Wendy Weaver, the daughter of MACW icons Johnny Weaver and Penny Banner, who both passed away in the last year, in front of the crowd.
Flair, accompanied by Beth Gillespie, the head of the Gillespie Agency that represents both him, Mick Foley, and Roddy Piper, was GQed down. Gillespie and her public relations agency are said to be particularly impressed with how well Flair cleans up.
Flair took pictures and signed autographs for about four hours. Since each photo he signed represented a hundred bucks and he signed what looked like a couple of hundred of them, well, it's nice work if you can get it.
