RF Video Shoot w/ Kevin Nash
Taped in 2007
By Sean Radican, Torch Columnist
Kevin Nash recently sat down with RF Video to do this shoot, which was filmed shortly before the Benoit tragedy. Nash covers his career from beginning to end, as he discusses his early days in WCW all the way through some of his recent angles in TNA. He is a good interview and is funny throughout the interview, which is in stark contrast to some of the other shoots I’ve seen where the wrestler comes off as bored and uninterested in the interview.
Nash talks about his early days in WCW. One of the funniest parts from this portion of the shoot was Nash talking about how he tried to explain to Dusty Rhodes that Oz was a place and the wizard was the actual person, but Rhodes just laughed it off.
Of course the Vinnie Vegas character is discussed as well. Nash talks about his inspiration for the character and how HBK watched him on TV and enjoyed it. HBK ultimately helped Nash land a job in the WWE. Nash tells another great story about how he got his release and then faxed it to the WWE right away from the WCW’s office.
Nash doesn’t really get too in-depth about his lengthy run as WWE champion during his first stint in the WWE, but he does tell some great stories about The Kliq and how they gained power in the locker room. Nash says they realized the WWE was screwing them on pay days and decided to band together as a way to get fair pay, as the office played the boys against each other according to Nash.
The road stories Nash does tell are great, including a run in with a huge group of policemen when he, HBK, and Waltman had just done a bunch of pills mixed with some drinking. Of course, Triple H was the driver and wasn’t doing any of that stuff on that day. The fallout from this story is just hilarious, but it makes you realize how incredibly stupid the things they did together were.
The NWO gimmick is discussed, but some of the questions I would have asked Nash aren’t brought up during this segment of the shoot. Nash admits that management put the NWO shirt on so many wrestlers just to get them over, but it got out of hand and eventually the concept was watered down. Nash defends the booking when his loss to Hogan after a 1 finger push is brought up. He claims Goldberg ruined the idea, but I won’t spoil the scenario he lies out for it to work in this space.
It’s sad to listen to Nash talk about the damage he’s done to his body throughout his career. The talk of the amount of substance abuse he’s been a part of or witnessed is also disturbing to listen to. On the bright side, it was good to listen to Nash talk about his family now being a part of his daily routine. He also talks about wanting to get more involved in TNA in other capacities besides wrestling.
Nash laughs off people who say he has avoided doing jobs throughout his career, but he claims to have been in the hospital or having surgery each time Feinstein brings up a scenario where he did a job. One of the things that had me shaking my head was when he had surgery around the time he was supposed to do a job to Chris Sabin in TNA, but later on he goes on to talk about how it wouldn’t be realistic for someone his size to lose to an X division wrestler anyway. Nash really did a great job getting those guys over.
Nash’s time in TNA is discussed at some length. I don’t agree with most of what Nash has to say about the X division, as his thoughts come off as someone out of touch with the modern landscape of pro wrestling. He also goes out of his way to bury ROH, which made me wonder why he brought it up out of the blue.
Overall thoughts: This was one of the better shoot interviews I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t agree with many of Nash’s opinions on wrestling, but he is a really funny guy with a sharp wit about him that makes this an enjoyable 3 hour shoot. I highly recommend getting your hands on this shoot, as it has some great stories and talks about a lot of popular topics from the past and present.
