(5) Gregory Iron beat Matt Justice (**3/4)

(6) Justin Mane beat Ryan Burke (**3/4)

(7) B.J. Whitmer beat Aaron Epic (***)

Overall thoughts: (5.0) – Midwest Wrestling is a new independent promotion based out of Ohio. This debut show was snake bitten in many ways, as Johnny Gargano was originally supposed to wrestle in the main event, but couldn’t due to injury, so eventually the main attraction became B.J. Whitmer taking on Aaron Epic.

I saw a lot of names on this show for the first time. I wasn’t impressed with all of them and feel that in order for this promotion to actually gain a foothold in what is a real battle to make money and draw attention that they need to bring in talent that has a good look and can tell good stories in the ring.

The opening match was fine, but never reached another level as DGUSA veteran Arik Cannon took on Ricky Shane Page, who I hadn’t seen before. They put together some hard-hitting spots down the stretch, but the match never progressed enough for me to truly engage in the action.

I’m also familiar with Jason Gory, as I’ve seen him tag in EVOLVE with Facade. He had a solid encounter with Aiden Vaile, but neither guy drew me into the action and I thought Gory went overboard in the end hitting several moves on Vaile before putting him away.

Next up was the only tag bout of the night with the Cutthroat Crew taking on Cornell & Gott. This one was hard to get into, as I couldn’t buy into either team as being credible in the ring. Sure, they pulled off some nice exchanges, but these guys need to work on their look. Rapier & Rackem look to have potential as a unit, but they need to ditch the pirate gimmick.

The Three Way Elimination also featured another familiar face in Facade. He didn’t have his best night in this match compared to the matches I’ve seen in UWF and EVOLVE where he’s had better nights. Beverly and Hollister were fine, but this match really dragged at times and it didn’t help that all three men didn’t seem to be on the same page in certain spots.

The quality of the card improved from this point forward. Iron vs. Justice was a fun match. Iron is a real inspiration to watch anytime he gets in the ring and he plays the underdog role perfectly. Mane-Burke was solid as well. Mane seems to have some potential on the mic as a heel and he did a nice job riling up the fans before the match.

I enjoyed the main event with Whitmer taking on Epic. Epic did a good job getting across his role as a heel and they told a nice story with Mane working over Whitmer’s neck throughout the match. It’s nice to see Whitmer back wrestling again and he looks like he hasn’t missed a beat given his performances here and in DGUSA. I also liked how the post-match attack from Mane on Whitmer eventually resulted in a tag match for the next show that will see Whitmer & Page take on Cannon & Epic.

The show closed with a series of promos that set up some matches for the next show in April including Beverly vs. Hollister, Mane issued a challenge to anyone MW Wrestling wanted to put in the ring with him, and Whitmer & Page and Cannon & Epic cut separate promos to set up their tag match as well.

The positives to this show were that there were a lot of kids in the crowd and that provided a fun atmosphere for the show. The show finished better than the beginning and middle stages of the show, which dragged at times. I came away impressed by Mane and Epic, who I hadn’t seen before. I’m looking forward to seeing what this promotion does in the future. I’d like to see more matches that tell a good story and build to a satisfying finish. Now that the promotion has some storylines in place, it will be interesting to see where they go from here.
