RADICAN’S WWE MOVIE REVIEW SERIES
“BENDING THE RULES”
RELEASED MARCH 9, 2012 IN THEATRES

Soon to be WWE Hall of Fame member Edge stars in “Bending the Rules” alongside Jamie Kennedy. The movie had a limited run in theatres earlier this month, but it now available on DVD. Having seen my fair share of movies, this was definitely one of the better ones.

Edge stars as Nick Blades, a New Orleans police detective currently on trial for corruption opposite Jamie Kennedy, who stars as Theo Gold, an assistant D.A. trying Blade’s case. Both men play their roles well, but the script falters at times and the viewer must suspend their disbelief to make their way through the movie, which is a mix of comedy and drama.

Early in the movie, Blades runs into Gil, a small time criminal on the street. It isn’t long before another man wearing a mask is pointing a gun at Edge. Things move into motion from this point forward rather nicely and Edge plays the role of the sarcastic cop well. His unusual attire fits his gruff character well and there’s definitely a certain charm about the dynamic between the straight laced Gold and Blades as they work together to crack a case throughout the movie.

Kennedy’s character is flushed out fairly well with a lot of depth given to the background of his character, who isn’t having the best day at the beginning of the movie, as his wife is leaving him, Blades’s trial is thrown out because of a hung jury, and his beloved vintage car has gone missing. He also finds out his not going to get the D.A. job, which he’s been working towards for a long time.

Gold’s mother and father are cleverly involved in the script. Jessica Walter plays Gold’s mother, who suspects her husband is cheating on her and wants Blades to investigate for her. It turns out Lena Gold starred in one of Blade’s favorite movies.
Blade obtains and paper from Gil at the beginning of the movie and it unlatches a plot by a soon-to-be executed inmate running an organized crime syndicate from death row to get revenge on Theo Gold, who tried him along with several others.

Blade keeps Theo in the dark as to exactly who and what they are chasing down, as Theo just wants to get the car back before his father finds out that it’s gone. Throughout the movie Theo and Blade banter back and forth about morality and whether or not Theo is going to have the charges against Blade dropped.

There are some genuinely funny moments as Blade tries to hunt down Gil after he slipped away from police to further uncover the plot. There is one scene where Blade, Theo, and his parents watch Lena Gold’s movie. Edge is hilarious as he really gets into one scene and begins reciting Lena’s lines.

The movie keeps things moving briskly and it never gets boring, but it’s not enthralling either. The climax of the movie is a letdown and the ending scene is a classic cliché in movies of this genre. That being said, Edge appears to have potential to be a leading man at some point. He’s genuinely funny and charming in this film. Kennedy, who I’ve enjoyed in a variety of television and movie roles, steps outside his comfort zone at times and oversells some of the comedic segments he’s involved in, but overall plays his role well.

As with most WWE movies, the script gets in the way here, but it wasn’t as poor as the scripts for “Inside Out” and “The Reunion,” which were released during the later stages of 2011. This is definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of Edge, but even if you’re skeptical about whether or not this movie is worth your time, it’s certainly worth a rental.

You can purchase this release exclusively at WalMart.
