RADICAN'S TAKE
RADICAN'S TAKE: Thoughts on the March 10 edition of ROH TV - Blind Destiny Challenge, WM weekend iPPV hype

By Sean Radican, Torch columnist

The March 10 edition of ROH TV did a relatively good job of hyping the WrestleMania weekend events. The main thrust of the show was to set up the “Blind Destiny” challenge for the March 31 “Showdown in the Sun” iPPV. The idea is one winner of the three possible matches in the challenge will get to face whoever is the ROH World Hvt. Champion after the March 30 “Showdown in the Sun” iPPV. Of course, Grandpa Jim did a backstage sit down interview to try to make sense out of all of this instead of just naming Adam Cole as the #1 contender to the ROH World Title after he pinned current champion Davey Richards in the main event of the “10th Ann. Show” iPPV on March 4.

The show presented three matches with each winner advancing to face one member of the main event of the March 30 show pitting ROH World Hvt. Champion Davey Richards against Roderick Strong and Eddie Edwards. First up was Jay Lethal taking on Kenny King for the right to face Roderick Strong. Lethal and King were shown backstage prior to the match and their promos were edited together so it seemed like they were jawing back and forth without actually being in the same room together. Lethal’s delivery seemed forced here, but the good part was that his promo put over the importance of the ROH World Title.

The Lethal-King match was fine, but suffered from a lack of heat. Lethal ended up getting the win. The thing that really perplexed me was that there was no mention of Cole’s pin on Richards at the “10th Ann. Show.” Cole cut a promo before facing Kevin Steen in the second blind destiny match, but didn’t reference his win over Richards.

Next up was Cole facing Kevin Steen for the right to Face Eddie Edwards on March 31. It doesn’t make sense for Cole to get a victory that big and not even talk about it. To compound the problem, Steen beat Cole without much trouble in a match that seemed to be designed to further Steen’s ongoing march towards facing Richards for the ROH World Title. To make matters even worse, the “Blind Destiny” challenge didn’t even set up the possibility of a Steen vs. Richards title match that most ROH fans want to see.

The main event featured Kyle O’Reilly taking on Michael Elgin for the right to face Davey Richards on March 31 was the best part of the show. Richards joined McGuiness and Kelly on commentary and all three men did a great job of talking about what was going on during the match and what O’Reilly had to do to get the win. McGuiness and Richards did a great job of taking fans inside the ring and the mindset Richards currently has as the ROH World Champion. Elgin ended up getting the win in the end, but overall this was a really solid segment to close the show while getting Richards some much needed time on the mic to cement his character on television.

Overall, the March 10 edition of ROH TV featured some good wrestling, but the “Blind Destiny” storyline seems like a way of forcing matches for the March 31 iPPV instead of letting the storylines play out naturally. There are too many hokey names for mini-tournaments and matches, as the “Dual Duel” stipulations for the ANX vs. Young Bucks matches on both iPPVs were discussed.

Another thing that’s frustrating is the lack of fan-friendly interaction on the show. No twitter hashtag was given for the “Showdown in the Sun” iPPVs. Nobody came on screen and walked fans through the process of watching an iPPV. There are ways to get an iPPV onto your television screen, but how many casual fans are going to take that step?
